Welcome to the Future of Nothing. BMW called its “i Vision Dee” a futuristic mid-size sedan with a new and pared-down design language. We call it the BMW WTF. The name “Dee” stands for Digital Emotional Experience – "and that is precisely its aim: to create an even stronger bond between people and their cars going forward," according to BMW PR minions. “With the BMW i Vision Dee, we are showcasing what is possible when hardware and software merge. In this way, we are able to exploit the full potential of digitalization to transform the car into an intelligent companion. That is the future for automotive manufacturers – and, also, for BMW: the fusion of the virtual experience with genuine driving pleasure,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. Exactly 70 years after the Corvette debuted at Motorama in New York City, Chevrolet returned to introduce the first-ever electrified Corvette with all-wheel-drive and a powerful 6.2L LT2 Small Block V-8: The 2024 E-Ray. “In 1953, the enthusiastic reaction to the Chevrolet Corvette concept kicked off seven decades of passion, performance and American ingenuity,” said Mark Reuss, General Motors president. “E-Ray, as the first electrified, all-wheel-drive Corvette, takes it a step further and expands the promise of what Corvette can deliver.” Developed to be the Corvette owners can arrive in anywhere, no matter the season, the new E-Ray — available in removable roof coupe and hardtop convertible models — uses electrification to enhance the driving experience with intense straight-line performance, all-weather confidence and sure-footed grand touring capabilities that can only be achieved with eAWD. E-Ray is also the only sports car pairing two separate propulsion systems to provide naturally aspirated V-8 power with electrified responsiveness powered by eAWD, making it "one like none," according to Chevrolet PR minions. (1/18)
There are multiple options for customers to select when it comes to personalizing their E-Ray’s interior including two carbon fiber trim packages, three seat choices, seven interior colors, and more. E-Ray also introduces the all-new Artemis Dipped interior, which features complementary deep green tones on nearly every interior surface and will only be available on 2024 Corvettes. Additionally, there are new Charge+ and Stop/Start buttons on the console and updates to the infotainment system and instrument cluster aimed at providing a more integrated appearance.
(Acura)
Editor-in-Chief's Note: Acura and its ad agency continue to try to position Acura in the market. And they continue to fail miserably. Their latest foray is this new brand campaign based on the theme New World. Same Energy. Acura PR minions describe it as "taking viewers on a fast-paced journey across the Acura multiverse in the brand’s Precision Crafted Performance vehicles. The new action-packed 60-second spot celebrates Acura performance and includes a first look at the brand’s all-electric future." Who they're aiming this spot at exactly is anyone's guess, but here's the High-Octane Truth: It's a visual kaleidoscope of Sound and Fury signifying not much, and it will do nothing to raise awareness or drive purchase consideration for the brand. Watch it here. Oh, and by the way, using "Voodoo Child" by Jimi Hendrix in another spot in this campaign makes my head - and heart - hurt. -PMD (1/18)
The AE Song of the Week:
"Beck's Bolero" by Jeff Beck from the album "Truth" (1967).* Written by Jimmy Page. Watch a video of Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page performing together at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony in 2009 here. And watch Jeff Beck and Stevie Wonder performing "Superstition" together at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary here.
*"Beck's Bolero" was recorded by Jeff Beck in a single-day recording session in 1966 with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon and Nicky Hopkins. They planned to record a whole album, but contractual obligations prevented them from recording together again, and this was the only song from that session that was released. This Beck/Page/Jones/Moon/Hopkins combination had the makings of a supergroup, and it nearly happened, but they couldn't find a suitable lead singer, failing to pry Steve Marriott away from Small Faces. Page and Jones then went on to form Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is the only credited songwriter on the cut. In a 1977 interview with Guitar Player magazine, he explained how the song came together after Simon Napier-Bell, who was producing the track, vanished. "On the 'Beck's Bolero' thing I was working with that, the track was done, and then the producer just disappeared," Page said. "He was never seen again; he simply didn't come back. Napier-Bell, he just sort of left me and Jeff to it. Jeff was playing and I was in the box (recording booth). And even though he says he wrote it, I wrote it. I'm playing the electric 12-string on it. Beck's doing the slide bits, and I'm basically playing around the chords. The idea was built around (classical composer) Maurice Ravel's 'Bolero.' It's got a lot of drama to it; it came off right. It was a good lineup too, with Keith Moon, and everything." "Beck's Bolero" first appeared in 1967 on the B-side of Beck's first single, a novelty-ish song called "Hi Ho Silver Lining," which has a rare lead vocal by Beck (on some pressings, the song is titled "Bolero"). In 1968, it was included on Truth, the first Jeff Beck Group album. It's the only instrumental on the album, which has lead vocals by a young Rod Stewart, the group's frontman. The album title comes from something Rod Stewart would say. Before going on stage, he would ask Beck, "Shall we tell them the truth tonight?" meaning should they deliver the goods. Beck loved the saying and the intention behind it, so he used it as the title. "He was a great soul who did great music,” Wonder told the Detroit Free Press. “I’m glad that I was able to meet him and have him in my life, giving some of his gift to my music.” Wonder and Beck were introduced to one another by Robert Margouleff and Malcolm Cecil, producers who had worked with Wonder on 1972’s groundbreaking “Music of My Mind” and were now involved in its follow-up, the album that would become “Talking Book.” In the early days he performed with The Yardbirds and Beck, Bogert and Appice. In 1975 he switched to a largely instrumental style of play. Beck was one of rock's foremost guitar players, a virtuoso in every sense of the word. He was considered a "guitarist's guitarist" and Rolling Stone described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock." he was inducted into the Rock and Hall of Fame twice; with The Yardbirds in 1992, and as a solo artist in 2009. He was presented to the Hall by Jimmy Page in 2009. Jeff Beck passed away last week from a bout of bacterial meningitis at a hospital in East Sussex, United Kingdom. He was 78. On June 8, 1948 - 75 years ago - the 356 No. 1 Roadster became the first automobile bearing the Porsche name to receive its general operating permit – effectively the birth of the sports car brand. Porsche is marking its anniversary year with the new Porsche Vision 357 concept, a reference to the Porsche 356, Ferry Porsche’s dream of a sports car. The Vision 357 concept car brings that monolithic form into the present day. The Style Porsche Team established this new concept as being reflective of "the interplay between tradition and innovation: what would the dream of a sports car of Ferry Porsche might look like today?" according to Porsche PR minions. “We created a very special birthday present in the form of the Porsche Vision 357, one which uses the 356 as a basis to underscore the significance of our design DNA,” said Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. “The concept car is an attempt to combine the past, present and future with coherency, featuring proportions that are reminiscent of its historical archetype and details that visualize the outlook for the future.” Built on the technology platform of the 718 GT4 RS, the Porsche Vision 357 exterior concept study is the highlight of the special exhibition “75 Years of Porsche sports cars” at the Volkswagen Group’s “DRIVE” Forum in Berlin, which opened with an exclusive evening event on January 25, 2023. The exhibition will be open to the public from January 27, 2023, and the Porsche Vision 357 was on exhibit until mid-February. (1/25)
(Audi)
The Activesphere concept is the fourth model in the series of "sphere" concept vehicles introduced by Audi. Following the Skysphere roadster in 2021, and both the Audi Grandsphere sedan and the Audi Urbansphere space concept in April 2022, the four-door Activesphere is a crossover coupé. The concept is 4.98 meters long, with a higher ground clearance and large 22-inch wheels. The Activesphere has a sportback rear that can turn into an open cargo bed at the touch of a button – designed to carry recreational equipment such as e-bikes, or water and winter sports gear. The Audi Activesphere features a drive system and suspension that make it equally adept both on and off the road. The steering wheel and pedals allow the driver to actively control the car, while also offering autonomous driving capability. The concept car was conceived and designed at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu, which is just a stone’s throw away from the Pacific Coast Highway. Studio manager Gael Buzyn and his team are the creative minds behind the project. He describes the idea for the concept: “The activesphere is unique. It is a new type of crossover that cleverly combines the elegance of an Audi Sportback, the practicality of a SUV and true offroad capabilities.” (1/25)

(Bugatti)
Seems like a lot of cheese for a car that will probably never turn a wheel. The Bugatti Chiron Profilée is a one-of-a-kind piece of Bugatti history and the last W16-powered car available from the manufacturer. It sold for a price of 9,792,500 Euros net at the RM Sotheby’s auction, which took place in Paris on February 1st. It makes the Chiron Profilée the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. With production of the Chiron, the W16 Mistral and the Bolide completely sold out, the Chiron Profilée represented the last possible opportunity to buy a new Bugatti powered by the legendary W16 engine directly from the Atelier in Molsheim, France. Editor’s Note: As for this year’s Super Bowl ads, all I can say is, wow, what a dismal affair that was. It was so dismal that Peter dispensed with writing his traditional post-Super Bowl column about the automotive advertising that showed up on the game, because he didn't find the marketing efforts to be worthy. Where have all the BIG IDEAS gone? Let’s review – very briefly. Kia showed up at the Big Game with “Binky Dad” – featuring its wildly popular Telluride SUV and a frantic dad who has to race back home (in a series of outlandish heroic vehicle escapades) from the family’s vacation spot when the mom discovers they’ve left the baby’s binky (pacifier) behind. He arrives back at the hotel only to discover that the baby’s favorite binky is blue, and of course he brought the green one. Alrighty then! This was mildly entertaining, but that’s it. Oh, well, at least it was the highest-scoring automotive ad on the USA Today Ad Meter. Next up, General Motors and Netflix with “EVs on Screen.” Here we have Will Ferrell (whom we really like) showing up in a variety of scenes to make the point that GM is teaming up with the streaming giant to include its EVs in movies and shows. This was just okay – it definitely wasn’t Super Bowl worthy (hey, product placement - there’s a fresh new idea). And I’m not sure it does much to advance the EV message or generate awareness. Jeep came to the party with “Electric Boogie” to showcase the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe. It features an all-new version of the iconic song Electric Boogie, which was first recorded in 1983. Various species from the animal kingdom are seen dancing as the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee travel through the wilderness. “Freedom is electrifying” as the tagline says. Yes, yes, it is, but this ad? Not so much. The second effort from Stellantis and its global chief marketing officer, Olivier “I’m a genius, just ask me” Francois, is “Premature Electrification” for RAM. This spot spoofs erectile dysfunction ads to draw parallels with EV performance (“lacking the confidence about getting and keeping a charge,” etc.). Francois says the main message is that Ram’s electric pickup may not be the first to the market, but it’s going to be worth waiting for compared to the current offerings. That message was WAY OVERSHADOWED by all the ‘fun’ playing off ED to hit EVs – all that’s left is basically a reinforcement of all of the erroneous beliefs out there about EVs and their ability to perform. I can’t go on. Really. But just a quick veer off-topic for a few dishonorable mentions in the non-automotive category. Michelob Ultra “New Members Day” (homage to Caddy Shack), M&M’s “M&M’s Super Bowl 2023” (part of a publicity stunt M&M’s started in January about retiring its spokescandies, but really just an incredible waste of Maya Rudolph that left us saying, WTF?), Downy “Call me Downy McBride” (another waste, this time of a very funny Danny McBride). Can’t comment anymore. Too awful. Must. Stop. Olivier Francois insists that people want comedic relief right now. I just want relief from this barrage of lackluster and decidedly mediocre Super Bowl advertising. It was really a DOWNER. -WG Editor-in-Chief's Note: I concur with everything WG said, plus the fact that the imaginative "high-concept" spots were missing in action, making the marketing part of the big game a crushing bore and a huge disappointment. And Olivier "I'm a genius, just ask me" Francois flat-out dropped the ball this go-around. The only word that comes to mind is underwhelming. I will add one more thing. The halftime show with Rihanna was a giant yawn. The pre-game hype for this "event" was inescapable. It was going to be huge! It was going to be great! It was going to be... Rihanna! But instead, it was beyond tedious. Just "seeing" Rihanna after her four-year layoff didn't constitute an "event," even though the social media hordes couldn't stop gushing about it. Pathetic. In the pantheon of great Super Bowl halftime shows - Prince, U2, etc. - Rihanna didn't even register. In fact, it was just plain B-A-D. -PMD (2/15)
(Lamborghini)
The Future Began in 1963. Sixty years ago, in an area that at the time was open countryside, construction of the Automobili Lamborghini factory began. The company was established on May 6, 1963, realizing Ferruccio Lamborghini’s dream of becoming a manufacturer of sports cars, an industry dominated by just a few brands back then. Right from the start, the founder and his very young engineers showed a passion for innovation and a desire to disrupt the dogmas of the sports car world, which were truly groundbreaking and led to a radical revolution. These values, which still form the cornerstone of the company today, would lead to the birth of legendary cars such as the Miura, a car that coined the term “supercar” and that has since inspired the entire automotive industry with its spirit and its styling. The 60th anniversary celebrations began on January 19 with the opening of the remodeled Lamborghini Museum in Sant’Agata Bolognese, located in the original factory areas. The museum was renovated and rearranged specially for the celebrations with an exhibition entitled, The Future Began In 1963. (2/15)
(Meyers Manx)
Meyers Manx unveiled its first-ever Remastered Kit, which empowers enthusiasts to build and customize the world’s most iconic dune buggy according to their personalized specs. The all-new Meyers Manx Remastered kit benefits from modernized production techniques that leverage 3D scanning, digital design tools and CNC technology to deliver the most precise self-assembly set to date. The result is an easier-to-build kit boasting higher quality construction that honors Bruce Meyers’ groundbreaking creation while incorporating updates by legendary designer Freeman Thomas. The re-imagined kit introduces new features for the first time since 1970, including: An all-new, locking rear trunk; An easily-removable dash assembly; Integrated wiring tubes; New remastered classic kit colors, including a solid gel-coat and metal flake gel-coat hues, along with a UV clear coat that serves as an additional layer of protection. The kit includes key body, dashboard, and trim components. Additional parts are available separately. “It is a privilege to work on the Manx Dune buggy, which is such an iconic piece of California cultural history,” Thomas said. “The goal of the Remastered program was to preserve [founder] Bruce Meyers’ unmistakable design while incorporating modern touches that make full assembly accessible to more people.” Meyers Manx chairman and Trousdale Ventures founder Phillip Sarofim added that the most authentic and satisfying Manx experience involves building and customizing a buggy kit. “The 1960s were all about can-do spirit, from grassroots car customizers to the Space Program,” Sarofim said. “We’re bringing a taste of that era back with a modernized, easier-to-build version of the original dune buggy kit that launched an automotive cultural movement. The original Meyers Manx has been prolifically emulated but never duplicated, and this is an opportunity to build and drive an authentic legend.” The Remastered Kit has already stoked interest from Alois Ruf, founder of Ruf Automobile. “We’ve always loved how the classic Meyers Manx Buggy drives,” he said. “Knowing that at-home assembly has been a challenge for some, the Remastered Kit should make it easier for a new group of enthusiasts to build their dream cars at home.” Meyers Manx also recently announced that 2023 will mark the debut of the Meyers Manx 2.0, the electric version of the classic buggy. The company is expected to announce further production details soon. (2/22)

Maserati concluded its second appearance at the I.C.E. St. Moritz, which brought together the rarest and most appealing classic cars (and collectors) at the prestigious Swiss venue on February 24 and 25. The Italian luxury brand, partner of the I.C.E. (International Concours of Elegance) – St. Moritz, took part by displaying some of its most desirable creations from the past and future. One that drew a lot of attention was the Maserati 420M/58 Eldorado – created for the second 500 Miglia in Monza (above) - held in 1958. Others included the fabulous 1954 Maserati 250 F Grand Prix car and the Maserati 450S sports racer, of which nine cars were built between 1956 and 1958. (3/1)
Editor-in-Chief's Note: Did you ever think the reports of Tesla quality and safety issues were overblown? Think again. Automotive News reported that the National Highway Traffic Administration has opened a formal investigation into 120,000 2023 Model Y crossovers. The reason? Oh, nothing much, except of reports that the steering wheels may become detached while driving. NHTSA is aware of two reports from Model Y owners of "complete detachment of the steering column while driving." Repeat that back to yourself s-l-o-w-l-y, as in, WTF? Apparently both Model Y owners were delivered their vehicles with the bolt attaching the steering wheel to the steering column missing. In one complaint to NHTSA, a Tesla Model Y vehicle owner in New Jersey described driving along a U.S. highway when the steering wheel suddenly fell off. The owner said the 2023 model-year vehicle was purchased Jan. 24, and the incident happened just days later on Jan. 29. That this is unconscionable and inexcusable is stating the obvious. The litany of egregious and outrageous quality issues with Teslas is long and unforgivable. (Remember the incident when the roof blew off of a Model 3 while the owner was driving home after taking delivery of it? - WG). The fact that the Cult of Elon blinds people - and some journalists - to the fundamental and unacceptable recurring quality issues with Tesla vehicles is just plain sad and pathetic. Any other car company would have been brought before Congress long ago to be questioned about the quality atrocities that Tesla has displayed from the beginning, yet this car company has been allowed to churn out piss-poor quality vehicles with impunity. It's just flat-out disgusting at this juncture. -PMD (3/8)

Have you ever gazed longingly at the pallets at Costco and wondered to yourself, "I could really use one of those." Well, Honda may just have your vehicle. This is the all-electric Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV), which "represents a new category of capable work vehicle for companies that need autonomous operation or delivery solutions," according to Honda PR minions. The AWV's capabilities include more pallet capacity, payload and enhanced obstacle detection. Honda is inviting potential business partners and companies interested in field testing AWV to Honda's booth at CONEXPO 2023 in Las Vegas, March 14-18, 2023. Interested construction entities will have an opportunity to learn more about field testing the rugged off-road platform at their worksites. Watch a video of the Honda AWV here. (3/8)

Renowned car collector Bruce Meyer handed over the keys to his 1932 Ford “McGee Roadster” to Terry L. Karges, executive director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. Constructed by noted hot-rod builder Bob McGee, the McGee Roadster introduced an aesthetic that quickly became nearly ubiquitous in the roadster community. The popular hot rod will become part of the Petersen’s permanent collection. The Petersen Automotive Museum and the McGee Roadster share an origin story that stems from Hot Rod Magazine, founded by Robert E. Petersen in 1948. The McGee Roadster’s popularity skyrocketed after appearing on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine, the first street car to do so. Petersen’s subsequent success in publishing allowed him to launch one of the world’s finest automotive museums in 1994. “Hot rods are vital to the entire automotive industry, and Robert Petersen is the man who really brought hot rodding to the people. This car is an important piece of automotive history, and there is no more worthy destination than the Petersen Automotive Museum,” said Meyer, who is also founding chairman of the Petersen. The iconic roadster has raced on the Bonneville salt flats, served as a daily driver and originated many of the design cues synonymous with hot rodding. McGee, who started working on the roadster in 1947, created the signature look with plenty of customization, including lowered suspension, larger Lincoln Zephyr rear wheels, a three-piece louvered hood, peaked and filled grille shell, hidden door hinges and shaved door handles, all painted bright red with a custom interior. “The McGee Roadster is so much more than just a car. It is the symbol of an entire era and generation of innovative hot rodders,” said Karges. “We are honored by Bruce’s donation and proud to preserve this piece of history.” (3/15)

The latest entry in "The Answer to the Question that Absolutely No One is Asking" Sweepstakes is something called the Acura TLX Type S PMC Edition in "menacing" Gotham Gray Matte paint, according to Acura PR minions. Acura is actually "hand-assembling" just 50 of these cars at its Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio with specific details that amount to Not Much, as best as we can tell. But you do get an individually numbered serial plaque to designate the 2023 TLX Type S PMC Edition as a limited-edition vehicle (1 of 50), so there's that. How much? The cars arrived at dealers in the spring for a jaw-dropping $65,000. The only additional comment we had was: Why? (3/15)

Dodge unveiled what it called “the quickest, fastest and most powerful muscle car in the world,” the 1,025HP 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170. It was the brand’s seventh and final “Last Call” special-edition model, and it was introduced on March 20 at the Dodge Last Call Powered by Roadkill Nights Vegas performance festival at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. With its 1,025HP (at 6,500 rpm), 945 lb.-ft. (at 4,200 rpm) production HEMI® engine, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 reaches 60 mph in a blazing 1.66 seconds and features the highest G-force acceleration of any production car at 2.004 gs. The Demon 170 can also reach 900 horsepower and 810 lb.-ft. of torque on E10 fuel. Just how quick is it? The Challenger SRT Demon 170 runs the quarter-mile in an NHRA-certified 8.91 seconds at 151.17 mph. The Demon 170 also receives an NHRA violation letter “ban” for running a sub-nine-second quarter-mile without a safety cage and parachute. The 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 production was limited to at most 3,300 units, with 3,000 for the U.S. market and 300 for Canada, and with final total based on production capacity. The Challenger SRT Demon 170 had an MSRP of $96,666 (excluding destination and fees). (3/22)

Cadillac announced the development of Cadillac House at Vanderbilt — a new, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the individualized, bespoke client experience of the Cadillac CELESTIQ, the world’s first all-electric ultra-luxury sedan. The Saarinen-designed facility at General Motors’ Global Technical Center was restored to bring together select clients and designers for unprecedented collaboration on the ultra-luxury EV. Located on the modernist-style General Motors Global Technical Center campus, in Warren, Michigan, Cadillac House at Vanderbilt will welcome clients to collaborate personally with CELESTIQ designers and a concierge for an unparalleled custom commission experience. Cadillac started the process of selected client engagements in late spring, with the facility welcoming the first clients in late-summer 2023. The new Cadillac House is named after pioneering designer Suzanne Vanderbilt, who, in her day, was one of only a few women working in automotive design industry-wide. She joined GM Design in 1955, shortly before the Global Technical Center was inaugurated, and worked in the Cadillac studio. Her early work included the design of two unique vehicles: a 1958 Eldorado Seville Coupe called Baroness and the Cadillac Saxony convertible. She performed collaborative work with the Advanced Interior and Research Studios, designing safer vehicle interiors and securing two patents. Over the years, she provided essential mentorship to the next generation of women designers, before retiring in 1977. GM's Global Technical Center, designated a National Historic Landmark in 2014, is an icon of mid-century design and set the standard for the modern American corporate campus. It was the first major commission awarded to the celebrated modern architect Eero Saarinen. The building that Cadillac House at Vanderbilt inhabits — located directly across the lake from the main entrance — originally served as Central Restaurant and was an open space where the brightest creative and technical minds met to collaborate and design the future of transportation. In 1955, the design won an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). (3/29)
The AE Song of the Week:
I was born from love, and my poor mother worked the mines
I was raised on the Good Book of Jesus
'Til I read between the lines
Now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
And I can still remember him with love light in his eyes
But the light flickered out and parted
As the sun began to rise
Now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
Never mind the forecast 'cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the fury and the broken thunders
Come to match my ragin' soul
And now I don't believe I want to see the morning
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go down the stoney end
Mama, let me start all over
Cradle me, Mama, cradle me again
Going down the stoney end
I never wanted to go
I never wanted to go
Mama, I never wanted to go
"Stoney End" by Laura Nyro, from the album "More Than A New Discovery" (1966).* Written by Laura Nyro. Lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Lyrics powered by LyricFind. Watch Sara Bareilles perform "Stoney End" at Laura Nyro's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 here. And watch a CBS News Sunday Morning profile from 2001 on Laura Nyro here.
*Laura Nyro (October 18, 1947 – April 8, 1997) was an American songwriter, singer, and pianist. She achieved critical acclaim with her own recordings, particularly the albums Eli and the Thirteenth Confession (1968) and New York Tendaberry (1969) and had tremendous commercial success with various artists recording her work. Wider recognition for her artistry was posthumous while her contemporaries such as Elton John idolized her. She was praised for her strong emotive vocal style and 3-octave mezzo-soprano vocal range. Between 1968 and 1970, a number of artists had hits with her songs: The 5th Dimension with "Blowing Away", "Wedding Bell Blues", 'Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness" and "Save the Country"; Blood, Sweat & Tears and Peter, Paul and Mary recorded "When I Die"; Three Dog Night and Maynard Ferguson recorded "Eli's Comin'"; and Barbra Streisand recorded "Stoney End", "Time and Love", and "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man). Nyro's best-selling single was her recording of Carole King's and Gerry Goffin's "Up on the Roof." Nyro was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2010) and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2012). (Knowledge courtesy of Wikipedia and Songfacts.com) (3/29)

As far as we’re concerned, this is the only BMW worth owning. The BMW M2 is powered by a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-6-cylinder that differs in only a small number of details from the engine employed in the BMW M3 and BMW M4 models. Developing a maximum output of 338 kW/460HP, peak torque of 550 Nm (405 lb-ft) is produced between 2,650 and 5,870 rpm, with maximum output arriving at 6,250 rpm. The new engine revs to a maximum 7,200 rpm, accompanied by a M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps. Power is relayed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard. The Drivelogic function offers a choice of three shift settings. A six-speed manual gearbox is available as an option. It features Gear Shift Assistant, which uses engagement speed control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting under braking into corners. If required, the Gear Shift Assistant can be deactivated in the M Setup menu. The new BMW M2 accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds with the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission; and in 4.3 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox. Zero to 124 mph takes 13.5 seconds (automatic) or 14.3 seconds (manual). The limited top speed of the new BMW M2 can be raised from 250 km/h (155 mph) to 285 km/h (177 mph) by specifying the optional M Driver’s Package. Party on! (4/5)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but how about NO? The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is the brand's first all-electric series model. Based on the technology of the EQS SUV from Mercedes-EQ, "it combines technical perfection with Maybach exclusivity," according to Mercedes-Maybach PR minions – in line with Wilhelm Maybach's principle: "What is good must also be beautiful." These people are clueless, and the Progenitors of Suck. Editor-in-Chief's Note: This is the new 2024 BMW i7 M70 xDrive (catchy name, that). With two electric motors generating a maximum system output of 650HP and up to 811 lb-ft of torque, BMW says it goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, making it the quickest and most powerful model in BMW’s all-electric range. Preliminary estimated EPA range is up to 295 miles. How much? BMW isn't saying... yet. But know this: it not only weighs 5929 lbs., but it's further proof that BMW's "blunderbuss" school of design is rapidly falling down a rabbit hole of unmitigated ugliness that they'll likely never recover from. I started to ask the question "why?" out loud, but there's really no point. -PMD (4/19)

We’re glad at least somebody isn’t giving up on basic transportation. Honda called its Trail125 (above) "approachable, fun and versatile..." It was available for $3,999 in April. Purchase considerations for around-town transportation "don’t get much more practical than affordability and reliability," according to Honda PR minions, "both of which Honda’s Metropolitan (below) offers in spades." It was available beginning in May for $2,649. (4/19)
Editor-in-Chief's Note: We mourned the passing of Lloyd Reuss, who died at the age of 86. He was a gifted mechanical engineer who rose to become president of General Motors in 1990, after establishing a stellar track record at Buick. Reuss was a champion of the GM Impact EV concept, which debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 1990. The Impact would go on to be developed into the GM EV1 production car, decades before the EV "thing" became a thing. After Reuss (along with Chairman Bob Stempel) was forced out of GM at the age of 56 in a corporate shakeup in 1992, he would go on to contribute mightily to charitable endeavors for the rest of his days. He notably encouraged young students to embrace the engineering disciplines, becoming the executive dean of Detroit's Center for Advanced Technologies at Focus: HOPE — a position he used to promote engineering and manufacturing programs for inner-city residents. Calling Lloyd a "car guy" really didn’t do the man justice, because he was much more than that. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather - his son Mark is GM's current president - and he conducted himself with the utmost integrity and made meaningful contributions throughout his life. Lloyd was from a different time and a different era in this business, one that in many ways was better than the chaotic environment we live in today. It should also be noted that it is extremely rare that a father and son would go on to become presidents at the same car company. Lloyd was tremendously proud of his son, Mark. And Mark is equally proud of his dad's legacy in the business and in life. But I think if you asked Mark, he was most proud of the family man he called "Dad." -PMD (Thank you to Automotive News for some of the details.) (4/26)

Porsche launched the most powerful version yet of its mid-engine roadster: the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS. For the first time, the high-revving naturally aspirated engine from the 911 GT3 will power an open-top, mid-engine Porsche sports car. Like every modern RS model, the new 718 Spyder RS is available exclusively with the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung transmission (PDK). Gearshift paddles mounted on the steering wheel allow drivers to keep their hands on the wheel even when shifting gears manually. Alternatively, the driver can shift using the ergonomically designed selector lever on the center console. (5/10)
The powertrain of the new 718 Spyder RS is identical to that of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS coupe. The 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine revs to 9,000 rpm and generates up to 493HP and 331 lb.-ft. of torque. Combined with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK transmission, the 0-60 mph time is 3.2 seconds and it has a top track speed of 191 mph. In addition to the more powerful engine, the Spyder RS weighs 59 pounds less than the 2023 Porsche 718 Spyder with optional PDK. The entire top weighs slightly more than 40 lbs. This special design is a savings of more than 16 lbs. compared to the 718 Spyder and more than 36 lbs. versus the 718 Boxster.
The Race-Tex covered GT Sport steering wheel features a yellow 12-o'clock marking. The standard Full Bucket seats are made of lightweight CFRP in a carbon-weave finish and the seat covers are made of black leather, while the perforated Race-Tex seat centers feature a contrasting color with a black background. The contrasting colors are Arctic Grey and Carmine Red.
How much? The 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS carries an MSRP of $160,700, excluding $1,450 for delivery, processing and handling. It arrived at U.S. dealers last spring.

Audi celebrated 25 years of its TT sports car. Inspired by Bauhaus, the Coupé study from 1995 began series production in 1998. 178,765 first-generation Audi TT Coupés had rolled off the production line by 2006. In the course of emotionalizing the brand through a fresh, progressive design, American designer Freeman Thomas, under the then Head of Design Peter Schreyer, created a puristic sports car in the Audi TT Coupé. Audi presented the study at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1995. The model name “TT” is reminiscent of the legendary Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, one of the oldest motorsports events in the world and one where NSU and DKW celebrated great success with their motorcycles. The name “TT” also recalls the sporty NSU TT of the 1960s. The Audi TT Coupé’s deliberate departure from the usual Audi nomenclature underscored the complete novelty of the model. (5/10)

BMW unveiled its BMW Concept Touring Coupé at the opening of the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023. The closed two-seater, which was developed for one-off production - we're assuming this means that an individual commissioned BMW for this one-off build - is a machine BMW is calling "a timeless symbol of freedom on four wheels" according to BMW PR minions. It's clearly BMW Design's reimagined take on the shooting brake concept. The hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind BMW Concept Touring Coupé is reminiscent of the BMW 328 Touring Coupé that won the Mille Miglia endurance race back in 1940. The BMW Concept Touring Coupé is powered by the brand's hallmark six-cylinder in-line engine, with performance characteristics and refinement that confirm its status as a symbol of pure, unadulterated Sheer Driving Pleasure. Letter from L.A.

Beverly Hills. I know the BEV revolution is coming. I also know that I live in a state where the Governor has declared that the shiny, happy residents will not be able to buy anything else in a very short time. While, on the other hand, he's allowing developers free-rein to build new multi-family projects so under-parked that residents may be forced to run extension cords from their patios to top off that new Belchzap EUQ they’re forced to park at the curb. Not to mention the reality of Edison shutting down the grid if it looks as if there will be a wildfire, or the Internet going out in 90210 often enough that the local hardware store will sell you a big wrench and show you how to open your front gate for when the power is out in Trousdale. What about your must-not-miss filler and tooth-whitening appointment on Roxbury Drive? We can cross that bridge when we come to it. But in the meantime, could we at least stop the fan-dance of the groovy new models that also “won’t be long now”? Like the VW ID. Buzz? It has only been buzzing for a few years now and still won’t get here until next year. Like the disastrous launch of the retro T-Bird of years ago, it has been teased, photographed, written-off, etc. for so long now I feel like I've already tired of it, getting ready to return it at the end of the lease... The AE Quote of the Century: Everybody loves The High-Octane Truth. Until they don't. -WG
Editor's Note: I used to write a lot more in these pages, and I know my absence has left quite a void for my four fans (or is it five? -WG- wait, can I comment on myself?!). But if you read The Autoextremist on a regular basis, what more is there to say that hasn't already been said? Maybe I'm just too busy shaking my head to type - something that's been going on for literally years now. Is it just me, or does it seem like Groundhog Day around here? The "Electric Future" has been talked about, promised, predicted, envisioned, etc., for so long now that I feel like it has already been and gone. It's shaping up to either be a cataclysmic shift or a big yawner. Or, more likely, something in-between. People have been saying that cars are E-V-I-L at least since the dawn of the automobile (that's a perfectly good buggy!). I just hope everyone who is saying that now is riding a bike. Or walking. Or staying home. (Doubt it.) Yes, something's gotta give (it always does). There always has to be a bogeyman, and the car makes a damn good one. But raising pitchforks and damning all that the automobile has been to culture doesn't really move the conversation forward. I'm not trying to go all Pollyanna here - quite the contrary; I actually think we're in a fairly grim portion of the automotive story. I'm just saying that we need take a break from all the gloom and doom and hand-wringing, if only briefly. There are no guarantees. About anything. So, if you're a fan - of cars and freedom and the open road (and the incomparable magic of these three together) - just try to eke out a little pleasure here and there, while we wait for whatever the Auto Future holds. Go for a drive. -WG (5/31)

Celebrating 75 years of Porsche sports cars, the German manufacturer revealed its newest concept car: the Mission X. "As a design study, not offered for sale, with production to be decided in due time, the Mission X is a glimpse into what the sports car of the future could look like," according to Porsche PR Minions. “The Porsche Mission X is a technology beacon for the sports car of the future. It picks up the torch of iconic sports cars of decades past: like the 959, the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder before it, the Mission X provides critical impetus for the evolutionary development of future vehicle concepts,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “Daring to dream and dream cars are two sides of the same coin for us: Porsche has only remained Porsche by constantly changing.” Michael Mauer, Head of Style Porsche, says: “The Mission X is a clear commitment to the core of the brand. The continuing, enhanced expression of our brand and product identity is an important compass for us to navigate the development of our series-production models. The concept study symbolizes a symbiosis of unmistakable motorsport DNA with a luxurious overall impression.”
Measuring approximately 177 inches long and 78.7 inches wide, the Mission X concept study is a relatively compact hypercar. With a wheelbase of 107.4 inches, it has the dimensions of the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. For aerodynamic purposes, the concept car has staggered tires, with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear. The battery is installed centrally behind the vehicle’s seats. This ‘e-core layout’ centers the mass in the car. As with a conventionally powered mid-engine car, this provides the basis for excellent agility. Watch the Porsche Mission X video here. (6/7)
This is what Porsche expects the Mission X to deliver IF it reaches production:
§ Be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife
§ Have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one hp per 2.2 lbs.
§ Achieve downforce values that are well in excess of those delivered by the current 911 GT3 RS
§ Offer significantly improved charging performance with its 900-volt system architecture and charge roughly twice as quickly as the current Porsche frontrunner, the Taycan Turbo S
Editor-in-Chief's Note: There is no "if" about the Mission X. You can bet that Porsche has a production plan for it that will be revealed in due time. -PMD

Editor-in-Chief's Note: We hesitate even showing "The Damn Thing" (our new Official AE Name for the VW ID. Buzz -WG) to our readers yet again, but since VW operatives are insisting that they have "new" news about The Damn Thing, we'll go ahead and get our Giant Red Stapler out and nail it to your proverbial cardboard cubicle walls. The USA version of The Damn Thing will have a 91kWh battery and 282HP for the RWD variant, and 330HP and dual motors for the available AWD version. (And a top speed of an electronically limited 90 mph.) But VW operatives are most giddy about the fact that the USA version will have three rows of seats! Halle-frickin'-luja!!! (In other news, the new phone book's here!!! -WG) In case you need to be reminded, the ID. Buzz is 192.4 inches long, which is nearly 10 inches longer than the two-row Buzz, the additional length coming from a 127.5-inch wheelbase, versus 117.6 inches for the two-row. It is 77.9 inches wide and 74.6 inches tall, making it roughly as wide as an Atlas, but five inches taller. The coefficient of drag is just 0.29, at least allegedly. Let's face it, the previous Most Botched Launch Ever trophy went - hands down - to the most recent Ford Thunderbird, which was unveiled in 1997, suffered through an ill-fated - and yes, botched - launch in 2002-2003, and was finally put out of its misery in 2005. VW's handling of The Damn Thing is even more egregious. VW first showed it in January 2017 at the Detroit Auto Show. And guess what? It is not arriving in the USA market until late fall of 2024 as a 2025 model. And seeing as that means we won't see any of The Damn Things at dealers until January 2025, that will make it eight full years since it was unveiled in Detroit. I don't know about you, but that's unmitigated Bush League Bullshit from where we sit. Over and out. -PMD (6/7)
Father's Day in Beverly Hills.
By Tom Pease
Beverly Hills. This Sunday marked the 28th time the City of Beverly Hills celebrated Father’s Day with the annual Concours d’Elegance, this time back on Rodeo after a couple years of alternate events because of Covid. In anticipation of the crowds the event started an hour early, and the crowds were already starting to, well, crowd into the three blocks under the morning June Gloom. Fisker and Lucid were there showing things I didn’t care about, so sorry, no photos. But please enjoy a selection of photos of the cars that caught my eye. And if you happen to find yourself in Los Angeles next Father's Day, be sure to stop by the Concours 2024. (6/21)

(Singer Vehicle Design images)
In response to requests from clients, Singer Vehicle Design - the California-based luxury specialist that restores air-cooled Porsche 911s in collaboration with their owners - has evolved the Dynamics & Lightweighting Study (DLS) to incorporate turbocharging. These latest restoration and modification services result in another Porsche 911 reimagined by Singer - the DLS Turbo - to celebrate the victorious 934/5 endurance racers of the 1970s. The process begins when the owner of a Type 964 Porsche 911 sends their car to Singer with the request to carry out a personalized restoration. The owner’s car is carefully disassembled. The interior is removed, as are the exterior bodywork and all mechanical components, until the steel monocoque (chassis) is revealed. The chassis is painstakingly assessed, cleaned, strengthened and prepared so that it is in optimal condition for the next stages of the restoration. A modified carbon fiber bodywork is used to reduce weight and increase stiffness. The shape of the carbon fiber bodywork is influenced by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis - to optimize aerodynamic performance. A central front intake and hood vent optimize cooling performance, while rear fender intakes and NACA ducts aid brake and turbocharger cooling. Some owners prefer their restoration be track-focused (shown in Blood Orange), while others prefer a road-focused restoration (shown in Moet Blanc). As with all Singer’s restoration and modification services, the engine from the owner’s Type 964 Porsche 911 is the starting point. The engine is disassembled down to the engine block before being restored using high performance components and modifications to optimize performance. The unique, 3.8L, 4-valves per cylinder flat-six uses twin turbochargers, with electric wastegates, air-to-water intercooling and a horizontally mounted, electrically powered fan. This evolution of the engine developed for DLS restorations enables power outputs over 700HP at more than 9000 rpm. Each restoration is unique. Every owner is able to share their personal preferences and requirements for bespoke engineering as part of the process of working with Singer to personalize their own 911. Prices for Singer's restoration services are dependent on the requests by each car’s owner. A limited number of restorations will be commissioned. In other words, you probably can't afford it. Bugatti celebrated the official centenary of the racing debut of one of its most innovative cars: the Type 32 ‘Tank’. This streamlined racing car was to lay the foundations for aerodynamic innovations in motorsport, earning its nickname not only for its shape, but also for its visible rivets and bolts. The Type 32 debuted at the French Grand Prix on July 2, 1923, in the city of Tours in the beautiful Loire Valley. A huge crowd of 300,000 spectators gathered to see an array of cutting-edge race cars, but the car that attracted the most attention was the bold machine from Ettore Bugatti. What immediately caught the eye of the crowd was the slipstreamed Type 32 and its airplane-inspired wing-shaped body, a result of Bugatti’s conviction that advanced aerodynamics would have an increasingly important role to play in enhancing the performance of racing cars. Although under the skin it was based heavily on the Type 30 – with its 2.0-litre eight-cylinder engine developing in the region of 90 PS – the unusual fairing, relatively short wheelbase and narrow track meant it looked like little else on the grid and caused a stir among the racing enthusiasts present. The Type 32 bristled with numerous innovative engineering solutions, including front hydraulic brakes, and a three-speed and reverse transaxle transmission. In total, five Type 32s were built – a prototype plus the four cars that took part in the Grand Prix – a race consisting of 35 grueling laps of the 22.83-kilometer circuit on public roads, for a total distance of just under 800 kilometers. Of the four Type 32 machines, the most successful was piloted by French driver Ernest Friderich, who finished third, completing the race in seven hours and 22.4 seconds at an average speed of just over 112 km/h. Though it was a creditable finish for the Type 32, the Tours was to prove its only GP appearance, as Bugatti instead focused on developing the iconic Type 35. This legendary Bugatti featured a host of new ideas – including the introduction of alloy wheels – and enjoyed phenomenal success, winning the Grand Prix World Championship in 1926. Despite its short GP career, the Type 32 proved an invaluable exercise for Bugatti, and many of the lessons learned were ultimately to pay dividends. In particular, the belief that aerodynamic efficiency could play such a pivotal, decisive role was proven conclusively in another race car whose streamlined, enclosed body earned it the ‘Tank’ moniker, the 57G. It dominated endurance racing in the 1930s, securing victory in the 1936 French Grand Prix and even more notably at Le Mans in 1937, demonstrating that Ettore Bugatti’s vision, first realized in the Type 32 ‘Tank’ of 1923, had been proven correct. The Bugatti Type 32 resides at Musée National de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, France, and can still be seen competing in action at certain historic races. (7/5)

A 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS set a new production car record at Road America, bettering the established record set in a 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The record-shattering lap was set by Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America veteran Dimitri Dimakos on the freshly paved “America's National Park of Speed.” Dimakos, a veteran of the Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America, lapped the 4.048-mile, 14 turn road course in a time of two minutes, 13.8 seconds. Conditions were near perfect, with an air temperature hovering around 75 degrees and a track temperature just above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The lap on the freshly paved classic American race course in the Kettle Moraine country of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, bettered the previous record of 2:15.1 set by David Donohue in a 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS in April 2019 by nearly two seconds. The feat is especially remarkable considering the huge horsepower difference between the 700HP prior record holder, and the 518HP 911 GT3 RS. “The biggest thing is not necessarily the lap time, it is the ease at which the car can achieve that lap time and the confidence it inspires in the driver,” Dimakos said. “The car can be driven by someone who is a novice or intermediate level driver and still be very fast and comfortable to drive. The braking is nearly identical to what we run in the 911 GT3 Cup car. I was braking at exactly the same spot. No wiggling at all. The car stopped exactly straight, turned-in great.” The sophisticated active aerodynamics and new Motorsport-based 4.0 liter, naturally aspirated, flat-six engine of the current generation 911 GT3 RS also made it more than 4.5 seconds quicker than the 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS at the same track. The privately-owned production-spec road car – which had been delivered to the owner just weeks before – was aligned for the track by an authorized Porsche Center and fitted with optional, road-legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R N0 high performance road tires size 275/35 ZR 20 front and 335/30 ZR 21 rear, which are specifically developed and homologated for the 911 GT3 RS. The official lap time was logged by onboard VBOX equipment and validated by Goldcrest Motorsports. (7/12)
(Nichols Engineering images)
This is the Nichols N1A: a contemporary Can-Am-inspired supercar that embodies the classic McLaren M1A design aesthetic with a radical update. Boasting an aggressive demeanor from its low-lying nose to its definitive tail, but with increased dimensions and space, the N1A mirrors the striking design simplicity of the MP4/4, all thanks to the same master designer, Steve Nichols. As a teenager, Steve wanted to be an F1 designer. The path wasn't obvious as a young man growing up in Utah. This meant a degree in aeronautical engineering and a first job at Hercules designing rocket motors and familiarizing himself with a new material, carbon fiber, years before its introduction in motorsport. Steve then spent two stints at McLaren. The first bringing his experience of carbon fiber to the McLaren MP4/1, working alongside John Barnard in a design department initially consisting of just three people. When John left to go to Ferrari, Steve became Chief Designer and saw firsthand the triumphs and tensions of the Senna/Prost pairing, while also acting as Ayrton's race engineer. Nichols was the Chief Designer of the McLaren MP4/4, the most successful car of all time, which won 15 out of 16 races during the 1988 season in the hands of the legendary Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. Steve followed Prost to Ferrari but returned to McLaren several years later at the request of CEO Martin Whitmarsh in a broad and hugely satisfying role covering all aspects of the F1 team. “When I was looking for a project to keep me amused in my old age, the idea of taking a fresh look at the very first McLaren, the 'M1A', had great appeal," Steve commented. "Initially intended as a prototype but time and registered interest has meant pursuing it with the aim to turn it into a beautifully finished vehicle worthy of its, and my, McLaren roots.” According to Goodwood Road & Racing, an initial run of seventeen launch-spec cars will feature a dry-sump 7.0-liter development of the GM LS3. These new blocks have been bored out to their new 427-cubic inch capacity with steel liners and upgraded pistons, producing around 660PS (485kW). Each of these engines will be built by Langford Performance Engineering, a company that has produced F1 engines in the past, most notably that of the Jordan 191, the car in which Michael Schumacher made his debut at the Belgian Grand Prix. All models will come with a six-speed manual gearbox. We don’t have any performance figures yet, but a power-to-weight ratio of around 710PS (522kW) per ton suggests that these will pack a Can-Am punch. No more than 100 Nichols N1As will be built in total, with production commencing before the end of 2023. Prices are said to be in the region of £450,000 after taxes in the UK. Editor's Note: Peter had to be revived after reading about this machine - it definitely put him over the edge. As far back as I can remember, he's talked about having a Can-Am-like sports car for the street. Well, here it is. -WG (8/2)

Editor-in-Chief's Note: If you like being Ricky Racer at your local cars and coffee, Ford has just the thing for you. Ford PR Minions are calling the 2025 Mustang GTD, "the most audacious and advanced Mustang ever, a limited-edition, street-legal performance car designed in parallel with Mustang GT3 race car and ready to take on the world’s best performance cars." The limited-production machine makes extensive use of carbon fiber in the body; a first-of-its-kind suspension that adjusts spring rate and ride height settings for track or street conditions; active aerodynamics; a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 with unique dry sump oil system; 8-speed dual-clutch rear transaxle and carbon fiber driveshaft for near ideal weight balance; magnesium wheels; available titanium exhaust; and carbon ceramic brakes. The Mustang GTD is heavily influenced by the ongoing development of the new Mustang GT3 racing machine that will compete in IMSA and on the global stage next season. The 5.2-liter supercharged V8 has a targeted output of over 800HP, and the stated goal is for a sub-7-minute lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Production of the Mustang GTD will be severely limited - although who's kidding whom here, if you have the ca$h-ola, I'm sure they'll cobble together enough pieces to build you one - and pricing is expected to begin at approximately $300,000. (Go ahead and add at least $25,000 to that now. Make that $50,000 closer to intro.) The initial build of the GTD will start at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant and then it will be transported to Multimatic facilities in Markham, Canada, where it will be handcrafted by the Multimatic technical teams. The Mustang GTD will be available in late 2024, or early 2025 (that means late spring 2025 at the earliest). Interested? Go to ford.com for more information. This is Ford's blatant attempt at grabbing some of that Porsche 911 GT3/GT3 RS market. It won't work, but it will certainly get a rise out of the Mustang Faithful. -PMD (8/23)

Editor-in-Chief's Note: It has been a long slide into mediocrity for Mercedes-Benz. After all, this is the company that nurtured one of the greatest advertising themes in automotive history - "Engineered Like No Other Car in The World" - for decades. That theme described Mercedes-Benz to a "T", at least for a while. The cars were special back then, and enthusiast consumers appreciated the nuances about owning a Mercedes. But just like seemingly every other car company in the world, Mercedes started to lose its grip on what made the cars special. The cars became uninspired, and it showed, and the knuckleheads in Mercedes-Benz marketing abandoned one of the greatest advertising themes of all time. They made a brief rebound with "The Best Or Nothing" - the company's original motto - but it didn't take, and Mercedes marketers floundered, right along with the rest of the company. "Defining Class since 1886" is one of the worst auto advertising themes ever created. As a car company, if you have to say it, this just in: you're the furthest thing from it. Mercedes-Benz executives and its marketing team seem hell-bent on relegating the brand to afterthought status. And they're succeeding. It's truly pathetic. -PMD (9/6)

This is the BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept which shows – allegedly - what the next generation of its vehicles will look like. “The BMW Vision Neue Klasse combines our ability to innovate in the core areas of electrification, digitalization, and circularity,” says Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “In this way, we are always able to stay two steps ahead of the future: The Neue Klasse is already bringing the mobility of the next decade to the roads in 2025 – and leading BMW into a new era.” The Vision Neue Klasse "embodies a clear design language, with expansive surfaces and a just a few distinctive lines, that has been pared down to the essentials," according to BMW PR Minions. This approach "accentuates signature features like the BMW kidney grille and the Hofmeister kink of the side window graphic, giving the design even more of a BMW feel," according to BMW. The interior features the next generation of BMW iDrive, which will offer "a unique digital user experience that merges real and virtual worlds." Increased use of secondary raw materials, resource-efficient production, and a fully-electric drivetrain with sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology reduces the carbon footprint of the Neue Klasse across the vehicle lifecycle. “30% more range, 30% faster charging, 25% more efficiency – the Neue Klasse represents a major technological leap that will take EfficientDynamics to new heights. The same applies to its design – which could not be any more futuristic,” says Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Development. “With the Neue Klasse, we have embarked on the biggest investment in the company’s history. We are not just writing the next chapter of BMW; we’re writing a whole new book. That’s why the Neue Klasse will certainly impact all model generations.” That's a lot to chew on, but it will be a giant "We'll see" until it becomes closer to reality and the production-influenced versions begin to surface. Editor-in-Chief's Note: Gotta love those German auto execs. Circularity? WTF? My guess it has something to do with start-to-finish recycling, but again, WTF? As far as the design, it has potential (somewhat), but how they translate it to actual production will be another story all together. If it's the next-generation 3 Series I could see it - if I squint - but still, we'll just call it for exactly what it is: the latest and most giant "We'll see" yet. -PMD (9/6)

Alfa Romeo unveiled the rebirth of the “fuoriserie” (custom-built) 33 Stradale, "a genuine manifesto of the Italian brand’s capabilities – now and in the future – in terms of style and driving experience," according to Alfa Romeo PR Minions. With only 33 exclusive - and already sold - units, aligned with a unique artisan process, the new two-seater coupé "combines Alfa Romeo’s heritage and future as a symbol of noble Italian sportsmanship," according to the Italian manufacturer. Alfa Romeo’s new limited-edition car follows in the footsteps of an icon of the 1960s — the Tipo 33. Alfa Romeo plans for the new 33 Stradale to be "the ideal link between internal combustion and electric powertrain, achieved by tastefully and respectfully reinterpreting the design of the original car," Alfa's PR Minions continued. The 33 Stradale will come in two configurations: A V-6 twin-turbo delivering more than 620HP, eight-speed DCT gearbox, rear-wheel-drive and electronic limited-slip differential; and a BEV configuration that delivers more than 750HP with estimated range of 450 km (WLTP). Top speed is estimated to be 206 mph/333 km/h, 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds and braking from 100 km/h to 0 in under 33 m. Two trim levels will be available: Tributo and Alfa Corse. Handcrafted at the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera, the tailor-made quality standards "guarantee obsessive attention to detail," according to the manufacturer. Each car is designed to be a unique, one-off work of art, becoming part of Alfa Romeo history. In order to deliver an unprecedented level of customization and to guarantee the uniqueness of each car, the brand has created the “Bottega,” a team of Alfa Romeo professionals who work closely with customers from the onset, to jointly create each car, unique in every detail, including personally signing the chassis number. The Goddess has returned on CELESTIQ, paying homage to Cadillac’s illustrious design history and symbolizing the personalized, handcrafted artistry built into each and every bespoke vehicle. “Reimagining the Goddess was a beautiful experience because it required me to study the past and understand the evolution of what Cadillac is today,” said Cadillac Creative Sculptor Richard Wiquist, who came to the GM Design studios with a background in figurative art. “This rendition introduces a new, soaring form that reflects the brand’s heritage while also driving it into the future.” The Goddess was introduced in 1930, at the height of popularity for automotive mascots. In an era that lasted more than 25 years, several iterations were created, as the impressionistic form evolved with the brand’s design language and shifting cultural aspirations. Early examples reflected more classical influences, while later versions such as those of the 1950s took on a more abstract aesthetic that reflected popular Jet Age design trends. “The Goddess always represented the aesthetical zeitgeist,” said Wiquist, who found his inspiration in the 1933 Goddess that distinguished Cadillac’s legendary V-16 models of the era. “The 1933 figure had a great sense of motion conveyed through drapery that appeared to flow from the figure." In addition to the production Goddess figures that served as inspiration, the GM Design Center’s library provided additional perspective for Wiquist, with art history references of drapery incorporated in sculpture over hundreds of years. “Every detail in a sculpture holds meaning or is intended to evoke an emotional response,” said Wiquist. “For the new Goddess, it had to have context and imbue the personal connection the figure represents between Cadillac and its clients through vehicles such as CELESTIQ.” With no constraints on his design, Wiquist spent months handcrafting the new form in clay, refining the delicate impressionistic style until its gesture captured the essence of motion with a soaring stance — and a lithe, ethereal quality conveyed with meticulous sculpting craftsmanship. There wasn’t a mandate on how the new Goddess would be incorporated on CELESTIQ. The goal was simply to reinterpret the form for a new age, while other Cadillac artists would incorporate the imagery into the all-new CELESTIQ. The Goddess found its way on a pre-production prototype parked in the hallway of the Cadillac design studio. They included front-fender plaques on the exterior and, on the interior, the multi-function controller on the center console. Watch the video here. (9/13)

Editor-in-Chief's Note: Never missing an opportunity to up-charge their well-heeled "enthusiasts" - I don't call Porsche the "Greed Merchants" for nothing - the 911 GT3 R rennsport will immediately begin occupying the 77 garages of people hell-bent on being the Biggest Tools in the Shed. These cars won't be raced, but they might appear at a track day somewhere, only to be exercised gingerly for fear of diminishing their value. Editor's Note: Well, it's that time again. Time to launch a new ad slogan for Chevrolet. We've spent a decade trying to "Find New Roads." Now, the geniuses at Chevy's agency, Commonweath/McCann, are about to blow your mind with - wait for it - "Together let's drive." It's hard to believe GM did a year's worth of research to arrive at this gem, but it's true, folks. According to Chevrolet Marketing VP Steve Majoros, as told to Automotive News, the marketing team spent time with Chevy owners and non-owners alike, and "what emerged was a sense of respect and admiration for trusted institutions and a focus on friends, family and community." The friends and family thing I can buy, but "respect and admiration for trusted institutions"?!?! What planet did these focus groups take place on exactly??? (I'm thinking what passes for "research" these days is questionable, but that's a story for another day!) Majoros went on to explain that people are longing for togetherness in today's world, and Chevy would like to help them get that feeling. “I think it’s something that everyone deep down feels because it’s easy to criticize how things are today…but deep down, what people told us is, that’s not me. That’s not my family. That’s not my community. That’s not how I feel,” he said. Okay, so people are cynical and disgusted with the way things are - just not any of the people Chevy talked to! Wow. Moving on, let's review. "Lacks originality and creativity." Check. "Lacks emotional resonance." Check. "Could be any car company's slogan" Check. (Note to self: see Toyota, "Let's Go Places.") So yes, it checks all the boxes. Trouble is, they're all the wrong ones. You can watch the launch spot here (it debuted Friday evening during Game One of the World Series). It's lame, it's lazy, and it's just plain sad. Over the past several years, few automotive brands (if any) have done less with more than Chevrolet. And if the various 'comment' sections on the websites announcing the new tagline are anything to go by (even on GM's own boards), it ain't exactly a grand-slam home run. Or, to paraphrase one of the posts, "Someone actually got paid to come up with that?!?!" Enough said. -WG Editor-in-Chief's Note: WordGirl speaks the High-Octane Truth. Mercedes-AMG has unveiled its new AMG CLE 53 Coupe, which "combines the best of two worlds: agility and sportiness of the AMG C-Class with the interior space and elegance of the AMG E-Class," according to Mercedes-Benz PR minions. The CLE 53 features an AMG-enhanced and comprehensively upgraded M256M 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with turbocharging via an exhaust gas turbocharger and an electric auxiliary compressor producing 443HP and 413 lb-ft of torque (443 lb-ft for 12 seconds with overboost). The high-performance engine has optimized combustion chambers with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings, optimized injection and a new exhaust gas turbocharger. The 48-volt integrated starter generator (ISG) provides support at lower engine speeds with 23HP and 151 lb-ft. Power is transferred via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT® TCT 9G transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive. The improved electric auxiliary compressor can now be operated almost continuously over a longer period of time to provide higher torque at a wider range of engine speeds and enhance overall responsiveness of the engine. In addition, this allows for a larger exhaust gas turbocharger to be fitted for higher peak performance. No word on an intro date or pricing as of yet. (12/6)
The Washington Post, along with other media outlets, reported that Tesla is recalling more than 2 million vehicles to fix Autopilot systems that U.S. safety regulators determined did not have enough controls to prevent misuse. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tesla’s method of ensuring drivers are still paying attention while the partially automated system is activated is “insufficient.” The recall comes after a years-long investigation - finding 736 crashes with 17 fatalities - into crashes while the Autopilot system was activated. “There may be an increased risk of a crash,” the agency wrote, in some situations when the system is engaged “and the driver does not maintain responsibility for vehicle operation and is unprepared to intervene as necessary or fails to recognize when Autosteer is canceled or not engaged.” NHTSA said that Tesla will send out a software update to fix the problems affecting its 2012-2023 Model S, 2016-2023 Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles. The recall covers nearly all of the vehicles Tesla sold in the United States. The AE Song of the Year:
Hate to give the satisfaction asking how you're doing now
How's the castle built off people you pretend to care about?
Just what you wanted
Look at you, cool guy, you got it
I see the parties and the diamonds sometimes when I close my eyes
Six months of torture you sold as some forbidden paradise
I loved you truly
You gotta laugh at the stupidity
'Cause I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, fame fucker
Bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire
And every girl I ever talked to told me you were bad, bad news
You called them crazy, God, I hate the way I called 'em crazy too
You're so convincing
How do you lie without flinching?
(How do you lie? How do you lie? How do you lie?)
Oh, what a mesmerizing, paralyzing, fucked-up little thrill
Can't figure out just how you do it and God knows I never will
Went for me and not her
'Cause girls your age know better
I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh
Bloodsucker, fame fucker
Bleeding me dry like a goddamn vampire
You said it was true love, but wouldn't that be hard?
You can't love anyone 'cause that could mean you had a heart
I tried to help you out, now I know that I can't
'Cause how you think's the kind of thing I'll never understand
I've made some real big mistakes
But you make the worst one look fine
I should've known it was strange
You only come out at night
I used to think I was smart
But you made me look so naïve
The way you sold me for parts
As you sunk your teeth into me, oh

"Vampire" by Olivia Rodrigo, from the album "Guts" (2023).* Written by Daniel Nigro and Olivia Rodrigo. Publisher: Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC. Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind. Watch the original Music Video here.
*"Vampire" is a haunting piano-backed lament that delves into the depths of a toxic relationship. In this maudlin and semi-gothic pop-rocker, Olivia Rodrigo recounts the tale of a boyfriend who manipulated her, fed her lies, and leeched off her fame. Rodrigo compares her ex-lover to a vampire, a creature that thrives on sucking the life force out of others. In this case, he took and took from her, leaving her emotionally depleted while offering nothing in return but empty promises. "It's just a song about feeling used, and all of the anger and regret and heartbreak that comes with it," Rodrigo told Billboard. "And I think that's a common feeling, whether or not someone's famous. That was something that was just really bubbling inside of me - it's kind of an angry song, and I think I have a lot of trouble expressing feelings like anger and regret, those are particularly tough ones for me to express. I go to songwriting to get those feelings out that aren't super comfortable to express in everyday life. So, it was a very therapeutic experience, writing this song." During the second verse, Rodrigo hints that the vampire was much older, using the age difference to take advantage of her. She takes a swipe at him for dating younger women, which gives us a clue as to the potential subject of the song. Rodrigo gets so mad on the chorus that she drops an F-bomb (changed into "dream crusher" on the clean version). "I listened to a lot of heavier stuff growing up and that's what I've always been drawn to," she told Apple Music's Zane Lowe about her cussing. "But I think in my regular day-to-day life, I don't get to express those feelings of rage and dirty s--t and messing s--t up." "And I think in music, you have the freedom to express feelings that you don't get to express in your everyday life," Rodrigo added. "And so, I think maybe that's why I'm so drawn to this, because I don't get to be messy every day in daily life and work." Rodrigo co-wrote "Vampire" with Dan Nigro, the main producer on her blockbuster 2021 debut, Sour. Rodrigo released "Vampire" via Geffen Records as the first single from Guts on June 30, 2023. So why did she choose this rock opera to lead her second album? "I think as the album was coming together, we were coming up with a bunch of songs that we really liked, but this one always stuck out to me as something that I felt like was honoring my singer-songwriter roots, but felt like an evolution - in a good way that wasn't too stark," she explained. "And so I really liked it for that, and it was always one of my favorites." Rodrigo recorded "Vampire" at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Nigro provided drum programming, sang backing vocals, and played guitar, percussion, piano, bass, Moog and synthesizer. The other musicians are: Benjamin Romans: piano; Paul Cartwright: violin and viola; Sam Stewart: electric guitar; Sterling Laws: drums. The Petra Collins-directed video was filmed in Los Angeles. Canadian photographer and fashion designer Petra Collins previously worked with Rodrigo on the visuals for her 2021 singles "Good 4 U" and "Brutal." (Knowledge courtesy of Songfacts.com)

Editor-in-Chief's Note: The headline in the Mike Colias-penned story in The Wall Street Journal on Saturday, December 16th, pretty much said it all: Mary Barra Spent a Decade Transforming GM. It Hasn’t Been Enough. With the subhead: The CEO pushed GM hard into electric and driverless cars. The finish line keeps moving farther away. Ouch, Baby. The lengthy article spent considerable time tracing Barra's hard-earned ascension to the top, but it also documents Barra's Bad Bets on driverless technology and over-committing to EVs in excruciating detail, when the company wasn't even close to being ready. First, the driverless technology part. Under Barra's direction, GM poured $8 Billion into the San Francisco-based driverless startup, Cruise. It has proved to be an unmitigated disaster. The tech startup pulled about 400 robot taxis off the streets of San Francisco and a handful of other cities in October after one of its driverless vehicles collided with a pedestrian who had been struck by another car, and dragged her 20 feet. And then last week, Cruise announced that it had exited a slew of executives and laid off about one quarter of its workforce. There is no upside to this story. Even though GM suggested that $50 million in revenue was possible from Cruise by 2030, driverless technology is not only stalled, it is turning into a bottomless money pit, and GM's ass is hanging out in the breeze on this one, big time. As for the EV "thing," Barra made a huge and very public commitment to her "zero crashes, zero emissions, zero congestion" mantra to the tune of $35 Billion to be spent on development between 2020 and 2025. This combination of driverless technology and 100 percent EV production would be arriving by 2035, with 400,000 GM EVs on the road by 2023. In fact, Barra insisted that 2023 would be "a breakout year" for GM's EVs. This proved to be not even remotely feasible, and it was flat-out ridiculous. GM sold just 854 of its King Kong Hummer EVs in 2022. Let's consider that again. 854. Besides the aforementioned Cruise debacle, Barra's constant pronouncements that GM's EV technology would be prolific and widely accessible was a humiliating non-starter. GM made huge commitments to battery factories, and then production problems meant that it couldn't assemble batteries at a pace that was even close to being acceptable. Gaining access to key supplies was problematic as well. The ultimate result? GM simply couldn't build their EV portfolio with even a shred of a proper cadence. All together now: This is Not. Very. Good. for Barra. Colias reported that in an interview last week at a media event, Barra said she continues to have confidence in both the electric and driverless-car parts of her strategy. She is sticking with a goal of producing one million EVs in North America in 2025, and she still has faith that Cruise can lead the driverless race. “As you go through a technological transformation like this,” she said, “there’s going to be ups and downs.” Ups and downs? GM's problems aren't just "ups and downs," they're a continuous series of rolling miscalculations and show an alarming pattern of serial incompetence. Barra's only salvation in all of this? GM’s bottom-line performance has surged under Barra, as Colias reported, and GM's higher-margin business lines like trucks and SUVs are gushing profits. During Barra's tenure, operating profit nearly doubled from previous levels and consistently tops rivals. GM has beaten Wall Street earnings forecasts in 34 of the last 35 quarters. But, and this is a very large but, all of GM's notable profits have come from ICE-powered vehicles. Barra's delusional commitment to the EV "thing" has been a disaster for GM. Yes, she could be applauded for trying to get out in front of the "Grand Transition" but she - and GM - is so far out over their skis on this it is becoming dangerous for the company. It is clear that Barra has accomplished a lot of good things in her tenure at GM, but nothing lasts forever, even for the first female CEO of a major car company. The clock is ticking on Ms. Barra, and the High-Octane Truth is that the next eighteen months will prove to be pivotal for her and GM. -PMD (12/17)
