Editor-in-Chief's Note: The 1961 Corvette Mako Shark I (XP-755) and 1965 Corvette Mako Shark II concepts photographed at the GM Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. The Mako Shark I was designed by Larry Shinoda under the direction of GM Styling legend Bill Mitchell. It was largely inspired by the 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray racer which, of course, heavily influenced the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray production car. The Mako Shark II obviously influenced the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray production car. The inspiration for the paint on the Mako Shark concepts originated from Bill Mitchell, who caught a real one while fishing off the Gulf coast of Florida. He had the fish mounted on the wall of his GM Styling office, and insisted that his paint shop paint the Mako Shark I in gradations to match the colorization of his prized mounted Mako Shark. True story? After several attempts to paint the Mako Shark I concept, Mitchell was still not pleased, and the project ground to a halt because the paint wasn't "right" according to Mitchell. So, the next time Mitchell was away from the office on a trip, some ingenious designers had the idea of removing Mitchell's prized fish from the wall late one evening, and painting it exactly like the latest paint job on the Mako Shark I concept. Mitchell came back, and with no knowledge of what transpired, he pronounced the paint work on the Mako Shark I concept "perfect" and the concept headed to the show circuit. -PMD (3/25)

Editor-in-Chief's Note: Under Bill Mitchell's tutelage, GM did a lot of hot Corvair-based concepts. The first was the short-lived 1961 Corvair Sebring Spyder (in red), which was a mild custom, but it notably reflected Mitchell's love of open-top racing cars. That machine was followed by the 1962 Corvair Super Spyder concept, which was a dramatic departure from the production Corvair at the time. The Super Spyder (XP-785) was one of the most striking concepts from GM Styling during that era. Originally painted in Mitchell's favorite metallic silver (he loved the "Silver Arrow" Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix cars), the Super Spyder was a wild machine. It was shortened in length (171" vs. 180") and wheelbase (93" vs. 108") from the production Corvair (a 15" section was removed between the door and the rear wheel arches). The Super Spyder also bristled with race-oriented design details including a cut-down windscreen; aero mirrors; an aerodynamic headrest built into the long fiberglass rear deck; a split front bumper; racing capable headlights; three louvers ahead of each rear wheel; Halibrand alloy racing wheels with knockoff hubs; Corvette Sting Ray taillights, fabulous triple exhausts wrapping around each rear corner; a racing-oriented interior and it was equipped with a Paxton supercharger. This car remains stunning to this day, although it was subsequently repainted over the years (see below) to a different color. I accompanied Mitchell on a run up to the corner drugstore in this car; I will never forget it. Next week? The fantastic Corvair Monza GT and SS concepts from GM Styling. -PMD (4/1)

Editor's Note: Well, just to remind us that the OEMs are all-in on the EV thing, VW this weekend launched the first commercials for its upcoming ID.4 electric SUV. The main point? The EV revolution will take hold when EVs are accessible to everyone. Created by VW ad agency Johannes Leonardo, the first spot relies on images and music (rather than narration) to tell the story of advances in transportation through the ages. The message appears on-screen at the end: "History is made, when it's made for everyone." We like this ad a lot. Well done. -WG

Editor's Note: Longtime AE reader Mark Weaver passed along this remarkable shot of GM Styling Chief Bill Mitchell casually driving through downtown Birmingham, Michigan, in the 1959 Corvette Sting Ray racer. Peter has some additional comments below. -WG
The Way It Was.

This just popped up on Facebook and I had to share it with you in light of Peter’s fantastic stories from his childhood with Bill Mitchell as his neighbor… an amazing candid image of Bill Mitchell in the Sting Ray Concept in Birmingham… photographer unknown.

Mark Weaver/Auburn Hills, Michigan

Editor-in-Chief's Note: This fantastic picture shows Bill Mitchell in the 1959 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray racer heading east on Maple Rd. right through downtown Birmingham. As longtime readers know, Mitchell lived a block away from us in Birmingham, and he would often have three or four of GM Styling's latest concepts delivered to his house every Friday during the summer so he could drive them all weekend. I had the opportunity - and privilege - of riding with him in every GM concept car from the late 50s and early 60s, including the Corvette XP-700; Corvette Mako Shark I and II; Corvair Sebring Spyder; Corvair Super Spyder; Pontiac XP-400; Corvair Monza SS and GT and, of course, the sensational '59 Corvette Sting Ray racer, which remains my all-time favorite car. Judging by the way Mitchell is dressed, I would bet he's heading to GM Styling in Warren, Michigan, on a Monday morning. (He would often drive one of the cars he had delivered to his house on Friday back to work the following Monday morning.) I have often said that it was a different time and a different era, never to be repeated. This snapshot captures that perfectly. -PMD

Editor-in-Chief's Note: We don't have a particular reason to post these photos, except that the Jaguar D-Type is one of our all-time favorite cars. This gorgeous machine - in its rare, correct-from-the-factory Red - was purchased new from Bernie Ecclestone by British racer Peter Blond; other notable former owners include racer Jean Bloxham and Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin's manager). It just changed hands at the RM Sotheby's auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 25, 2021 for $6 million dollars. -PMD

Jaguar Classic is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the legendary C-type sports racer by creating a strictly limited production run of new C-type Continuation cars, which will be hand-built at Jaguar’s world-class Classic Works facility in Coventry. The C-type Continuation program will allow historic motor racing enthusiasts to purchase a new, factory-built example of the ultimate 1953 disc-brake-equipped ‘works’ C-type direct from Jaguar for the first time. The C-type, which was originally made between 1951-53, was famed for its exceptionally fluid shape by Jaguar Cars designer, aerodynamicist and artist Malcolm Sayer. The C-type won the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans on its debut in 1951, scoring the first of Jaguar’s seven outright wins at the French endurance classic. From 1952, the C-type pioneered the adoption of innovative disc brake technology in motorsport, with a revolutionary system developed by Jaguar and Dunlop scoring the first win for a disc-braked car with Stirling Moss at the Reims Grand Prix in France. The C-type won the 24 Hours of Le Mans again in 1953 - another first for disc brakes - and also enjoyed success in the hands of private owners. How many will be built? Eight. How much? Figure between $1.5 - $2 million.

This is a frickin' grand slam home run, folks. -PMD

(Hyundai images)
The Hyundai Motor Company took the wraps off of its future, the IONIQ 5 midsize CUV. As the first model in Hyundai’s new IONIQ brand dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEV), IONIQ 5 "sets the benchmark to redefine the electric mobility lifestyle with sustainable and innovative features," according to Hyundai PR minions. IONIQ 5 is built upon Hyundai's dedicated BEV architecture called Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which allows for unique proportions on an elongated wheelbase. “IONIQ 5 will accommodate lifestyles without limits, proactively caring for customers’ needs throughout their journey,” said Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer. “It is truly the first electric vehicle to provide a new experience with its innovative use of interior space and advanced technologies.” (Uh, that's a large dollop of hyperbole right there, but, it is what it is. - PMD)
The interior carries a ‘Living Space’ theme throughout, most notably embodied by the Universal Island, a moveable center console that can slide back as much as 140 mm.
IONIQ 5 is available with a choice of two battery pack options - either 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh[3] - and two electric motor layouts, either with a rear motor only or with both front and rear motors. All PE variations deliver a top speed of 185 km/h. At the top of the electric motor lineup is an all-wheel drive (AWD) option paired with the 72.6-kWh battery, producing a combined power output of 225-kWh and 605 Nm of torque. This PE configuration can go from 0 km/h to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. When equipped with two-wheel drive (2WD) and 72.6-kWh battery, IONIQ 5’s maximum driving range on a single charge will be around 470~480 km, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) standard (The U.S. standard will have lower range numbers - PMD.)
IONIQ 5’s E-GMP can support both 400-V and 800-V charging infrastructures. The platform offers 800-V charging capability as standard, along with 400-V charging, without the need for additional components or adapters. The multi-charging system is a world’s first patented technology that operates the motor and inverter to boost 400 V to 800 V for stable charging compatibility. Following the launch of IONIQ 5, Hyundai will expand its BEV lineup with IONIQ 6, an electric sedan, and IONIQ 7, a large electric SUV. Editor-in-Chief's Note: I find the design of the IONIQ 5 to be very interesting. It's clean and tightly rendered, with real character and perspective. I look forward to seeing it in person. -PMD

(Lamborghini images)

Exactly 50 years ago at the Geneva Motor Show, one of the most famous supercars ever built was introduced: the Lamborghini Countach LP 500. At ten o’clock in the morning in the exhibition space of Carrozzeria Bertone, this prototype made its first public appearance. Its unveil was so successful that the company raced against time to satisfy the customers’ requests and transform the futuristic show car into a production car, though in a small series. The decision to unveil the Countach LP 500 in Carrozzeria Bertone’s space was motivated by the fact that Lamborghini’s stand featured the latest arrival of the House of the Raging Bull: the Miura SV, perfected after five years of production. In the months following Geneva, the Countach LP 500 was featured in all the international automotive magazines. The Countach project, with internal code number LP112 - where LP indicates the rear longitudinal position (“Longitudinale Posteriore” in Italian) - of the 12-cylinder engine, stemmed from Ferruccio Lamborghini’s desire to maintain the image of a company at the forefront of style and technology following the Miura. Engineer Paolo Stanzani, who had been with Lamborghini since 1963, and in 1968 was named General Manager and Technical Director, was directly responsible for the mechanical part of the Countach. The beautiful, clean, futuristic lines of the Countach - the original LP 500 is still by far the best (PMD) - were styled by Marcello Gandini, Design Director of Carrozzeria Bertone. Gandini was also responsible for the decision to use the scissor doors, which since that time have characterized the production of Lamborghini’s 12-cylinder models. The LP 500 was a substantially different car than the Countach that would go into production in 1974. It had a platform frame rather than a tubular one, it was equipped with a 12-cylinder 4971cc engine (one of a kind), the engine air intakes had a shark gill design, and inside it featured sophisticated electronic instrumentation. The origin of the name of this car lies in the dialect of the Piedmont region. In its final stages of assembly, the car was hidden in a shed for agricultural machinery on a farm near Grugliasco (province of Turin) to avoid possible work stoppages related to labor unrest, and was “discovered” by a farmer who exclaimed in amazement and enthusiasm, “Countach!” (a word in the Piedmontese dialect expressing wonderment). When Piedmont-born Marcello Gandini became aware of the fact, he thought that this word had a particularly strong communicative force and also convinced Nuccio Bertone, Ferruccio Lamborghini and his colleague Paolo Stanzani of this. Following the LP 500’s success in Geneva, Lamborghini’s chief test driver Bob Wallace used the car, equipped with a more reliable 4-liter engine, for every possible kind of road test. The career of this extraordinary car ended at the beginning of 1974, when it was used for the crash tests required for the homologation of the production car and subsequently scrapped. From 1974 to 1990, 1,999 Countachs in five different series were produced, representing a model that, in addition to ending up displayed on the bedroom walls of an entire generation and being used in dozens of films, allowed Lamborghini to survive the most difficult years of its history.

(Maserati images)
Exactly 50 years have passed since March 11, 1971, when the Maserati Bora was unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show. The Bora was produced until 1978, with 564 cars built. Maserati asked Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign to come up with a mid-mounted rear engine sports car with enhanced performance, design, comfort and safety. The Bora engine was the tried and tested 4,700 cc Maserati V8, producing 310HP at 6,000 rpm. It would be joined by the 4,900 cc unit two years later. The engine was mounted lengthways on a subframe installed on the monocoque. The Bora’s distinctive features included retractable headlights, a projecting differential on the rear axle, independent suspension on all wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, dry-mounted single disc clutch, 5-speed gearbox and telescopic suspension dampers. The Bora had a top speed of over 174 mph (280 km/h). While the car’s engineering was orchestrated by Giulio Alfieri, the aerodynamics and styling were by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who created a two-seater coupé on simple, elegant lines which gave the Maserati Bora a balanced appearance. The approach was futuristic, with a low, slender, almost tapered front styled to cut through the air, while the front grille included two rectangular air vents with a Maserati Trident in the center. The sleek sides were centrally divided by a thin black rubber trim, while the rear ended in a Kamm tail. A total of 564 cars were built, with production ending in 1978.

(Cadillac images)
The production debut of the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ "illuminates the brand’s future and resets the fundamental notions of luxury motoring," according to Cadillac PR minions, and "is the culmination of a century of innovation and the beginning of a great new era." Since testing of Cadillac’s inaugural luxury SUV is running ahead of schedule, the brand announced that customers may place order reservations beginning in September 2021, with initial availability starting the first half of 2022.
At launch, LYRIQ will have a 12-module, 100 kilowatt-hour battery pack and a rear-wheel-drive Ultium Platform delivering a Cadillac-estimated 340HP and 440 Nm of torque; with a Cadillac-estimated over 300 miles of range with a full charge. LYRIQ also offers high-speed DC fast charging for public stations at 190 kW, enabling customers to add an estimated 76 miles of range in about 10 minutes of charging time. For home charging, LYRIQ offers a segment-leading 19.2 kW charging module, which can add up to 52 miles of range per hour of charge. LYRIQ will also feature next-generation variable Regen on Demand technology, along with the convenience of One-Pedal Driving. With Cadillac’s new variable Regen on Demand, drivers can control how quickly LYRIQ slows down or comes to a complete stop using a pressure-sensitive paddle located on the steering wheel. Both technologies make use of regenerative braking to help maximize electric driving efficiency.
The interior is clean and simple with a focus on secondary and tertiary design elements, including intricate laser etched patterns through wood over metal decor, which has never been done before. The large, curved LED screen is the centerpieceAdditional 2023 LYRIQ highlights include: Available Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology for compatible roads; A 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED display with the ability to emit over 1 billion colors; Cadillac’s next-generation Active Noise Cancellation system; Slim-line LED headlamps with choreographed lighting sequence; AKG Studio 19-speaker audio system with headrest speakers; KeyPass digital vehicle access; Dual level charge cord and standard 20-inch split six-spoke alloy wheels or optional 22-inch dynamic split-spoke Reverse Rim alloy wheels.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of the LYRIQ is its distinctive black crystal grille. The signature vertical lighting is emphasized through lighting choreography. The exterior lighting is a major technological breakthrough, allowing Cadillac to deliver on the promise of truly vertical lamps, an industry first. Customers will be able to select from Satin Steel Metallic or Stellar Black Metallic exterior colors, and Sky Cool Gray or Noir for the interior. “LYRIQ represents a clean-sheet design that sets the standard for the future of Cadillac,” said Andrew Smith, executive director of Cadillac Design. “The objective I gave my team was to design the LYRIQ with the level of detail that they would a show car. The customer should feel like they’re driving in the future.”
The detailed exterior lighting on the new LYRIQ is one of its most impressive features.
The 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ is expected to go into production in the first quarter of 2022, with pricing starting at $59,990. It will be produced at GM’s Spring Hill, Tennessee, assembly facility, which is receiving a $2 billion investment to facilitate electric vehicle production. (Auto Royale images)

The story of famous Italian designer Sergio Scaglietti was told at Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire in July when twelve Ferraris went on display at the  Auto Royale Concours. Event Director Paul Mathers said: “When one thinks of Italian coachbuilders, many iconic names come to mind. But when one considers Italy’s most collectable marque, one carrozzeria trumps them all. The son of a carpenter, Sergio Scaglietti founded his eponymous design and coachbuilding company in Modena in 1951, and its location across the road from Ferrari, combined with Sergio’s accomplished bodywork and design skills was destined to bring him and Enzo together for some of the finest automotive collaborations of the last century." He added: “In this year’s 70th anniversary, Auto Royale is proud to bring together not one but two classes to celebrate the work of Scaglietti as both a designer and coachbuilder in this year’s British International Concours d’Elegance.” “Starting out as a body shop, and having caught the eye of Ferrari,  Scaglietti soon began building Ferrari coachwork to Pininfarina designs. However because his own designs were both lightweight and aerodynamic, Scaglietti was soon given the job of both design and construction, particularly of Ferrari’s race cars," Mathers continued. Highlights of the Scaglietti road class include one of the most storied examples to emerge from Maranello: The 250 GT SWB (above) is a prized addition to any world-class collection, this example being one of only fourteen right-hand drive versions built, and one of only two originally delivered to the USA. Representing the V12 racers, chassis #0606 (below) has had an intriguing life. Starting out as a Works-entered 290MM during the 1956 season, it endured three years of racing and testing before having its engine replaced and being sold to Brazil as a “new” 250 Testa Rossa. “Stories abound in these special classes," Paul said. "Enzo once said that ‘Scaglietti wasn’t a man who relied on pencil and paper to create his magnificent designs: He worked like a sculptor, fashioning their forms in aluminium.' It’s been widely told that he never designed a body before seeing its chassis, allowing the design to drape organically over the car’s mechanicals. So what we are seeing in these two classes is not just the work of a designer, but of an artist.” In all, six race cars and six road cars will tell the story of Sergio Scaglietti on the lawns of Waddesdon Manor this July, and with some key showstoppers still to be announced, this will be an event that no Ferrarista will want to miss. Tickets are now on sale at www.autoroyale.org.

(Bugatti)
The latest from the "WTF" File: The following wretched excess is brought to you by Bugatti, which has come up with a new way to fleece its customers. The officially licensed Bugatti Pool Table is made in partnership with IXO®, designers and specialists of carbon fiber product construction. The carbon fiber finish of the Pool Table is underpinned by machined aluminum and titanium. The product meets the standards of a professional tournament pool table. A unique plate adorns each Bugatti Pool Table, displaying the famous Bugatti logo and the limited-edition number for each product. The Bugatti Pool Table can be equipped with an optional servo-driven system that deploys a gyroscopic sensor to level the table – in case of installation on board a yacht. Each leg can move to compensate for the movement of a ship and remain perfectly level. The system can adjust in just 5 milliseconds, and the movement is completed in total silence with vibration-free adjustment. The Pool Table will be made in a limited run of 30 tables, with five to be made by IXO® in 2021. The sides of the drawers of the Pool Table are manufactured with CNC-machined, brushed and anodized aluminum, complete with the Bugatti logo. Ball pockets made from stainless steel are lined with leather, with fittings complete with titanium screws and nuts to prevent corrosion from aluminum parts. The wall cue support is finished in carbon fiber, also featuring a 13-inch, high-resolution touch screen to keep track of scores. The carbon fiber pool cues feature anodized and CNC-machined aluminum ends that are made to the same design of the buttons of Bugatti hyper sports cars. A dimmable LED ceiling light is also made with carbon fiber, while other official branded Bugatti accessories include a chalk box finished in black with anodized aluminum, a cleaning brush in black, a suitcase made in Bugatti leather to transport the set of Aramith Tournament Pro balls while a USB key - also presented in a CNC-machined aluminium case - includes photos and videos of each table made, so a customer can see the full history of the manufacturing steps of their Pool Table. The box is lined with the same leather used in the construction of the Pool Table. When? The first official Bugatti Pool Table will be delivered to customers in June. How much? €250.000 - gulp - including the accessories.

(GMC HUMMER)
The GMC HUMMER EV Pickup is going through a rigorous off-road testing program prior to its production debut this fall. Traversing legendary trails across Moab, the team’s testing and calibration included Adaptive Air Suspension hardware, Extract Mode, Terrain Mode, One-Pedal Driving control, e4WD and torque distribution, eLockers, stability control, rear steering, CrabWalk and more. Available Terrain Mode - part of the GMC HUMMER EV’s Drive Mode Control - will offer two braking calibrations, with a mild braking option for two-foot driving and a purpose-designed One-Pedal Driving control in low-speed off-road driving. As pioneered by General Motors for other electric vehicles, One-Pedal Driving enables the driver to accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator pedal. With Terrain Mode, that same One-Pedal Driving control is adapted with unique calibrations for speed-limited off-road driving, helping the driver to negotiate steep grades, rock crawling and other challenging terrain without having to toggle between the accelerator and brake pedal. “One-Pedal Driving offers a great feeling of control by optimizing the regenerative braking, friction braking and drive motor torque all through the accelerator pedal,” said Aaron Pfau, GMC HUMMER EV lead development engineer. “Drivers will quickly realize the benefits once they try it off-road.” The upcoming available Extract Mode feature enables the Adaptive Air Suspension height to be raised approximately six inches in order to help the GMC HUMMER EV negotiate extreme off-road situations, such as clearing large boulders and fording deeper water. “The GMC HUMMER EV was a blank slate that was filled out by a dedicated team of engineers who are hardcore off-road enthusiasts,” said Pfau. “Features like One-Pedal Driving, Terrain Mode and Extract Mode result in an absolute off-road beast that will take you to new places.”

June 2

The original - and still our favorite - Autoextremist logo.

"Welcome to autoextremist.com. It's gonna be one helluva ride."
And so that is how our first Rant came to a close on June 1, 1999. Seems like only yesterday,...Hold it right there! That is a lie. It actually seems like a lifetime ago, and at two-plus decades, it's certainly a very good chunk of a lifetime. I must say, this whole anniversary thing has me a bit misty-eyed (or could they just be crossed from too much editing???). I was around in 1986 for the original AE MANIFESTO (I was just a very small child at the time, of course). And somehow, I managed to be around (still slogging away in advertising) when Peter said "Let's do this!" in 1999. Autoextremist makes me laugh, it makes me cry, it makes me sad, it makes me mad (and that was just Issue Number One). So much unbelievable shit has gone down over the last 22 years that if I hadn't lived every minute of it, I would think I must be trapped in some crazy dream (nightmare?). Why me, why then, why now - yes, indeed, why still now? I'm still here because I still love cars (from my '68 Camaro to my '57 Jag to my '76 2002, and everything in between - and yes, I wish I had kept more than just a few of them). And because I still believe in the power of words, and their ability to make us think and feel and sometimes even change things. So, yes, I am bittersweet as this June 1st approaches (the inexorable march of time and all that), but like Peter, I remain undaunted. Basically, we HAD to do Autoextremist.com Peter HAD to get out there and say what no one else wants to say - and more important, say what very, very few people want to hear. From Day One, AE has been about a whole new idea in cars and car advertising and car executives and car design…the Truth (what a concept!). And the past 22 years have made me more than a bit partial to The High-Octane Truth. So I guess I'm all-in for the duration. -WG

(Ford images)
Editor-In-Chief's Note: Two Things About Ford. (Posted 6/8, 9:11a.m.) Response from this week's column on Ford has been predictable. The naysayers say "this is just PMD hatin' on Farley and Wall Howard, nothing to see here." Comments from the opposite side of the spectrum say, "He's the only one saying what needs to be said, per usual." Comments from colleagues in the media and from analysts suggest that nothing else matters except for the stock price. And as long as it's up, all is forgiven and Farley is a hero. A giant "we'll see" as we like to say around here. The other news about Ford today is the unveiling of the all-new Maverick compact pickup truck. Ford says that the Maverick is "the first standard full-hybrid pickup in America and the most fuel-efficient truck on the market with a targeted EPA-estimated rating of 40 mpg in the city," and while its compact size makes it easy to maneuver and park, there’s still room for five adults and plenty of storage space. Other details? Maverick offers a standard 8-inch touch screen with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto® compatibility, standard FordPass™ Connect with embedded modem and Ford Co-Pilot360™ technologies like Automatic Emergency Braking and Automatic High Beam Headlamps – all for a starting MSRP of $19,995 (with destination charges it will be over that figure). Maverick's FLEXBED™ system provides a multi-position tailgate, slots to use lumber to subdivide the bed, 12 available anchor points, two 12-volt 20-amp prewired sources at the back enabling DIY electrical solutions, plus two available 110-volt outlets for powering a laptop or tailgate party. Its 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder hybrid powertrain delivers 191HP when combined with the electric motor, and 155 lb.-ft. of torque mated to a continuously variable transmission driving the front wheels. It features an in-house-designed and manufactured electric traction motor. Along with its targeted EPA-estimated fuel economy of 40 mpg city and 500 miles of range on a single tank of gas (your mileage performance will vary, of course), it offers standard payload of 1,500 pounds. and has the capability to tow 2,000 pounds. Those who want more capability can upgrade to a 2.0-liter EcoBoost gas engine delivering 250HP and 277 lb.-ft. of torque with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. Equipped with the optional 4K Tow Package, conventional towing doubles to 4,000 pounds – enough for an average 21-foot boat. Why is the Maverick a welcome development? I have been writing about affordability for five years on this website. Everything in the market is too expensive these days, no matter what the segment. Price in particular is a huge factor with EVs, with no relief in sight. True affordability means price and content, and I applaud Ford for nailing this formula with the Maverick (even though I'm sure that the average Maverick will go for around $30,000). So, forget about Ford's EV crossover or its electrified F-150, the Maverick is the most important product news to come out of Dearborn in years. -PMD

The seventh edition of the Porsche 911 GT3 can now be ordered with the no-cost equipment package that was first introduced with its predecessor. The 911 GT3 with Touring Package is delivered with a seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission as standard for the U.S. market, and a six-speed GT Sport manual transmission as a no-cost option in selected states. (The seven-speed PDK gearbox will be the only transmission offered in California with the 911 GT3. For those who prefer three pedals and are located outside of California, a six-speed manual gearbox will continue to be available at no extra cost.) This marks the first time that the Touring Package is available with the seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission. As on the predecessor, engine, transmission, suspension, wheels and tires on vehicles with the Touring Package are adopted from the regular 911 GT3. The most obvious difference with the Touring Package is the omission of the fixed rear wing. Instead, an automatically extending rear spoiler generates downforce at high speeds. Continuing the subtle theme, a "GT3 touring" logo is located on the rear grille, while trim strips of the side windows and the tailpipes of the sport exhaust system are colored in silver.

The name "Touring Package" goes back to an equipment variant of the 1973 911 Carrera RS. Porsche revived the idea again in 2017, and for the first time again offered a Touring Package for the previous generation of the 911 GT3, the Type 991.
In the 911 GT3 with Touring Package, the steering wheel rim, gear/selector lever, center console lid, door panel armrests and door handles are upholstered in black leather. Meanwhile, the seat centers are upholstered with fabric seat center panels, and head restraints bear embossed Porsche Crests. The door sill guards and trim elements on the dashboard and center console are made of brushed black aluminum.
Porsche also offers almost all the optional equipment for the 911 GT3 in combination with the Touring Package. This includes all exterior and wheel colors, LED headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System and Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus, various driver's assistance systems, Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), a Smart Front Axle Lift system, the same seat types that are available on the standard 911 GT3, the Chrono package and an optional BOSE® Surround Sound System. The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 with Touring Package will arrive in early 2022. How much? It ain't cheap. The MSRP starts $161,100 excluding $1,350 for delivery, processing and handling.

Now this is an Autoextremist-certified machine. The “Hellacious™” Charger, built by SpeedKore, is a road-going version of the movie car used in Universal Pictures’ new Fast & Furious , F9The “Hellacious™” Charger is the custom car builder’s first mid-engine muscle car. “This Charger is one of our most extreme builds to date,” said Jim Kacmarcik, president and owner of SpeedKore. “After commissioning renowned designer Sean Smith to design the car and working with F9’s picture vehicle coordinator Dennis McCarthy to build the nine chassis and vehicle bodies for the film, we wanted to bring the movie magic of F9 to life. ‘Hellacious’ is a road-going version of the movie car with the functionality of a purpose-built performance car. We couldn’t be more excited to debut ‘Hellacious’ alongside the actual film as yet another unique representation of our design and engineering capabilities as a custom car builder.” The “Hellacious” Charger gets its power from a supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V8 mounted between the rear axles in a custom SpeedKore-engineered frame. The engine’s 707HP and 650 pound-feet of torque make it to the rear wheels via a gated-manual Graziano transaxle from a Lamborghini Gallardo. Both the engine and transmission use Motul fluids for reliable performance. The Hellcat V8 breathes through a custom exhaust fabricated from MagnaFlow components; the SpeedKore-designed headers and dual mufflers are routed high in the chassis to clear the mid-engine powertrain before exiting through downward-facing tips. A front-mount Saldana performance radiator keeps the engine cool while accommodating the mid-engine architecture of the car. At the rear, high-performance intercoolers feed cool air to the 2.4-liter supercharger. The machine features a SpeedKore-designed perimeter frame with double A-arm front suspension from Detroit Speed and an integrated rear cradle with double wishbone suspension from Race Car Replicas (RCR). It is equipped with an Ididit steering column and Detroit Speed steering rack; QA1 shocks with track-focused dampening; Brembo 6-piston calipers up front and dual Brembo 4-piston calipers out back. Custom HRE 18-inch “Hellacious” center-lock wheels with 275/35R18 front and 345/35R18 rear tires complete this purpose-built setup. “Hellacious” is rendered in full carbon fiber like SpeedKore’s previous Chargers but adds a bespoke wide body styled by Sean Smith Designs. Pronounced fender cut-outs, unique body siding and a glass rear hatch to expose the engine compartment complete the aggressive bodywork while BASF Glasurit matte-black paint completes the bad-ass look. Inside, “Hellacious” is equipped with low-back racing seats and Simpson harnesses. Classic Instrument gauges are mounted in an aluminum dashboard, and an integrated roll hoop and rear-facing firewall complete the interior packaging. The SpeedKore Charger uses a vertical-slat grille and factory 1968 Charger hideaway headlights finished with metal brightwork, complimenting the brushed steel front and rear bumpers. Shaved rain gutters and flush-mounted glass present a seamless side profile while a rear fascia with round quad taillights and a bronze stripe keyed to the color of the wheels finish the look. INDYCAR driver JR Hildebrand recently had the opportunity to experience the exhilaration of driving the McLaren Elva. Designed for pure driving connection and engagement, the Elva is the lightest and most driver-focused vehicle in the McLaren model lineup. Powered by an 804BHP twin-turbo V8 engine, the Elva is capable of ferocious acceleration and handling that is both exploitable and accessible – points on which JR is in full agreement…’’The Elva is the newest car in the growing stable of McLaren Ultimate Series machines, with not only hyper-car performance but a hyper-specific use case. Where the McLaren Senna and McLaren Senna GTR exist to be the ultimate in track weapons, the Elva is designed for the ultimate immersive experience on your favorite roads, and to be completely unhidden from your environment - whether that be a coastal sea breeze or the paparazzi flash pulling up on Rodeo Drive. This car isn't for everyone, nor is it for every situation. If it was built for maximum comfort and usability it would have windows, a convertible roof, and a few more places to put your things. But it's not and it doesn't pretend to be. This car is for owning the fact that you, yes *you*, are driving a McLaren Elva, and for freeing yourself from whatever else you have going on to tap into the moment at hand by going for a drive.  It’s impossibly nimble and lightweight, blurring the boundaries between the car and all of its environment. Get this thing in a tunnel, wick it up to 9000rpm, pile on the brakes and bang that downshift – just the snap, crackle and pop that this thing gives you. It provides the purest sensation of connection to the road, it excites all your senses from smell, to taste, to the feeling through the steering wheel. It’s the most incredible machine for the A to A journey, just getting out and driving like nothing else matters. You want to know what it’s like to drive the McLaren Elva? It’s the ultimate driver’s car.’’ -JR Hildebrand. (Honda)
American Honda has confirmed that the 2022 Monkey will be powered by a torquey new engine with a fifth gear, the same powerplant as the all-new 2022 Grom that was announced last March. When it comes to miniMOTO models, Honda is the undisputed leader, and there's no better example of that than the legendary Monkey. The latest generation touts modern features that help it perform well and run reliably—a combination that has proven to be extremely popular with customers. A hit with both the new generation of enthusiasts and nostalgic riders seeking a trip down memory lane (its heritage extends back to 1961, when the original version was used in a Honda-owned Japanese amusement park called Tama Tech), the Monkey oozes fun and charm in a pint-size package. Now, for the first time, the Monkey has a fifth gear for more comfortable cruising, thanks to a new, modern engine with a wider spread of gear ratios and a 37-tooth final-drive sprocket (previously 34). The changes provide not only improved acceleration from low speeds, but increased top speed as well. The 124cc two-valve, overhead-cam, air-cooled engine has an undersquare design, with a narrower bore and longer stroke. Colors available: Pearl Black (shown) and Banana Yellow. How much? $4,199.

(Cadillac images)
The 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing (above, in Blue) — the fastest Cadillac production models ever — are available now, "achieving new heights of performance, driver technology and craftsmanship," according to Cadillac PR minions. The 2022 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing luxury sport sedans are the most track-capable Cadillacs ever built. The V-Series Blackwings represent the pinnacle of Cadillac performance, technology and craftsmanship. “Driving is always a blend of the quantifiable and the subjective, and in both regards, the new CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing deliver like few other luxury sport sedans,” said Mirza Grebovic, Cadillac performance variant manager. “They’ve got the numbers to stand with the world’s best, but they also transcend the stopwatch with the sort of satisfying driver experience that cannot be defined by lap times alone.” The CT5-V Blackwing is the most powerful and fastest Cadillac production model in history — with a top track speed of more than 200 mph — while the CT4-V Blackwing is the most powerful and fastest-ever Cadillac subcompact. The cars have also posted other impressive stopwatch results. The CT5-V Blackwing uses an upgraded and hand-assembled 6.2L supercharged V-8 rated at 668HP (498 kW) and 659 lb-ft of torque (893 Nm) while the CT4-V Blackwing is driven by an evolution of the Cadillac 3.6L Twin-Turbo V-6, which is rated 472HP (352 kW) and 445 lb-ft of torque (603 Nm). The turbos’ low-inertia turbine wheels enable more precise and responsive application of torque throughout the rev range. Each model is offered with a standard six-speed manual gearbox (get 'em while they're hot) or an available 10-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. “For nearly two decades, enthusiasts have told us how important it is to have the control of a manual gearbox in their performance sedan,” said Grebovic. “The ability to choose the driving experience they want is a luxury in and of itself, allowing them to feel more connected with the vehicle.”The six-speed manual transmission used with each model features unique gear-cut changes that enhance quietness and durability compared to the previous generation. The available 10-speed automatic has been refined and aggressively tuned for performance driving, with calibrations specific for the power and torque curves of the models’ respective engines. Details? CT4-V Blackwing: 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds (automatic), 4.1 seconds (manual). Top Speed (on track): 189 mph (304 km/h). 1/4-Mile Time: 12.14 @ 117 mph. CT5-V Blackwing: 0-60 mph in 3.4 seconds (automatic), 3.6 seconds (manual). Top Speed (on track): 200+ mph (322+ km/h). 1/4-Mile Time: 11.30 @ 129 mph. Editor-in-Chief's Note: These will be the fastest, most desirable high-performance sedans you can buy for The End of the ICE Era. And the fact that they're available with a manual gearbox makes them even more desirable. Read the myriad drive reviews for yourselves, these Cadillac high-performance machines are The Real Deal. -PMD

Speaking of concepts, this is the Audi Skysphere, an electric-powered, two-door convertible "whose lines lead directly to the Audi design of tomorrow," according to Audi PR minions. With it, the brand "is illustrating its vision for the progressive luxury segment of the future," in which the interior becomes an interactive space and the vehicle a platform for captivating experiences. (We can hardly wait.) It features autonomous driving, a revolutionary redesign of the interior and a seamless digital ecosystem. The Audi Skysphere concept shows how the brand is redefining luxury in the future – it’s no longer just about driving. (Oh, great.) The Audi Skysphere concept was designed for two different driving experiences: a grand touring experience and a sports experience. (Really? Sure.) This makes use of a spectacular technical detail – the variable wheelbase. Electric motors and a sophisticated mechanism with body and frame components that slide into one another make it possible to vary the wheelbase itself and the exterior length of the car by 250 millimeters. At the same time, the vehicle’s ground clearance is adjusted by 10 millimeters to enhance comfort and driving dynamics. With the touch of button, the driver can take advantage of their freedom and choose their own driving experience – either they pilot their 4.94-meter-long e-roadster themselves in “Sports” mode with a reduced wheelbase, while the rear-wheel steering ensures that the vehicle remains extremely agile despite its dimensions. Or they can choose to be chauffeured around in a 5.19-meter GT in the autonomous “Grand Touring” driving mode while enjoying the sky and the scenery, maximum legroom, and the services offered by a seamlessly integrated digital ecosystem. In this mode, the steering wheel and pedals move into an invisible area; the feeling of space in the concept car opens up completely new realms of possibility for such a sporty convertible. Meanwhile, the Audi Skysphere automatically keeps an eye on the road and traffic with its sensor system and drives the occupants safely to their destination. Editor-in-Chief's Note: I like the rear view, but as far as proportions go, the Cadillac Sixteen concept from back in 2003 was light years better. -PMD

Editor’s Note: Our favorite Monterey Car Week event is Concours on the Avenue, held this year on Tuesday 8/10 in the town of fairytale architecture, Carmel-by-the-Sea. This year marks the 14th year for the juried event, which closes down Carmel’s world-famous Ocean Avenue for a very cool parade of cars. Focusing on cars usually not seen elsewhere during the truly overwhelming 10-day event that comprises Monterey Car Week, Concours on the Avenue features various marques from 1940–1973, and Porsche and Ferrari models through 1989. Proceeds from the event support the Carmel Foundation, which provides a variety of services to Monterey Peninsula seniors. Check out the article and photo gallery from classiccars.com here. -WG

(Lamborghini images)

Automobili Lamborghini has unveiled the Countach LPI 800-4, calling it "a futuristic limited edition paying homage to the Countach’s iconic status as a revolutionary design and technology rule-breaker and recreated for the 21st century." (That's a stretch, literally. -PMD) The Countach LPI 800-4 retains the V12 experience and sound from its Longitudinale Posteriore (LP) mounted engine combined with the hybrid technology developed for the Sián. Delivering 814 cv as maximum combined power (rounded at 800 in the name) from its aspirated powerplant (780 cv) and electric motor (34 cv) to its permanent four-wheel drive transmission, the LPI 800-4 produces peak Lamborghini performance of 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 8.6 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h. “The Countach LPI 800-4 is a visionary car of the moment, just as its forerunner was,” says Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann. (Not in my estimation, no. -PMD) “One of the most important automotive icons, the Countach not only embodies the design and engineering tenet of Lamborghini but represents our philosophy of reinventing boundaries, achieving the unexpected and extraordinary and, most importantly, being the ‘stuff of dreams’. The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini legacy but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s might have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade. It upholds the Lamborghini tradition of looking forward, of exploring new design and technology avenues while celebrating the DNA of our brand. It is a Lamborghini that innately expresses the marque’s enduring and emotive power: always inspirational and thrilling to see, hear and most of all drive.” The LPI 800-4 will be produced in a run of 112 units. The number denotes the ‘LP 112’ internal project name used during the original Lamborghini Countach’s development. The Countach LPI 800-4 will be delivered from first quarter 2022 to owners worldwide, "privileged to drive a piece of automotive history reimagined for the future," according to Lamborghini's PR minions. Editor-in-Chief's Note: Why, why, why couldn't they leave well enough alone? It doesn't hold a candle to the original. Needless to say, I don't love it. -PMD

Editor-in-Chief's Note: THIS is why Lamborghini should have left well enough alone. The original Countach is a design masterpiece by Marcello Gandini of Bertone. -PMD

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colours anymore, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

I see a line of cars and they're all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a newborn baby, it just happens every day

I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door, I must have it painted black
Maybe then I'll fade away and not have to face the facts
It's not easy facing up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the setting sun
My love will laugh with me before the morning comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colours anymore, I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by, dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes

Hmm, hmm, hmm...

I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

Yeah!

Hmm, hmm, hmm...

(Mercedes-Benz)
This is the Concept EQG, a "near-production" study of an all-electric model variant of its Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This is what the Mercedes PR minions have to say: "Visually, the concept car combines the unmistakably striking look of the G-Class with selected design elements typical of all-electric models from Mercedes as contrasting highlights. The 4x4 qualities of the "G," which have always set the highest standard, will not only find their way into the age of electric mobility, but will be developed even further in some areas. The Concept EQG thus offers a promising preview of what a Mercedes-Benz G-Class with battery-electric drive will be capable of." Editor-in-Chief's Note: This abomination should be subtitled, "How to Ruin an SUV icon in one fell swoop." The designers who had a hand in this disgraceful piece of crap should be rounded up and forced to design door handles and sun visors - permanently. What a joke. -PMD
(Mercedes-Benz images)
This is what Mercedes PR minions have to say about the Mercedes-Maybach Concept EQS: "With the Concept EQS, Mercedes-Maybach is providing a clear preview of the first fully electric series-production model for the tradition-steeped luxury brand... The near-production one-off shows identifying features that are characteristic of Maybach – such as the elaborate two-tone paint finish – but its innovative drive technology also takes a step towards a significantly more progressive way of presenting the brand. In the interior, the rear becomes a comfortable place to work or rest thanks to Executive seats and the Chauffeur Package. In addition to these features are exclusive details such as new door panels, armrests that are designed like high-quality sideboards and trim elements in white piano lacquer and materials in deep-sea blue, which create a feel-good atmosphere on board as if on an elegant yacht." Editor-in-Chief's Note: Somewhere, the Design Gods are not amused. Mercedes Design is going down a deep, dark hole that they won't to be able to extricate themselves from. -PMD

(Mercedes-Benz images)
Mercedes is calling this executive sedan the EQE, and it is the second model to be based on the premium-class electric architecture (EVA2), following the luxury EQS sedan. The EQE will celebrate its world premiere at the IAA show and its staggered global launch will begin mid-2022. The EQE features "a sporty 'purpose design' with all the characteristic elements of Mercedes-EQ, one-bow lines and cab-forward design," according to Mercedes PR minions. They continue, unfortunately: "The overall design theme of Sensual Purity is reflected in generously modeled surfaces, reduced joints and seamless transitions. The overhangs and the front end are kept short, the rear provides the dynamic accent with a sharp rear spoiler. Flush with the outer edge of the body, the 19- to 21- inch wheels, together with a pronounced muscular shoulder section, give the EQE an athletic character." Editor-in-Chief's Note: Toyota Design called; they want their 2025 Camry designs back. Mercedes-Benz had a good run. Who could have ever imagined that they not only would go down the road of relentless mediocrity, but that instead of stopping to turn around once they saw they were headed in the wrong direction, would accelerate hard down The Path of Automotive Darkness? Next stop? Oblivion. -PMD

(BMW images)
Editor-in-Chief's Note: Meanwhile, BMW Motorrad showed what it calls the Vision AMBY (above) and BMW showed the i Vision AMBY (below). AMBY stands for “Adaptive Mobility.” The concepts "interpret the fundamental idea of adaptive urban mobility on two wheels based on differing facets," according to BMW PR minions. Both vehicles are electrically powered with three speed levels for different types of road. The drive allows up to 25 km/h on cycle paths, up to 45 km/h on inner-city roads and up to a top speed of 60 km/h on multi-lane roads and out of town. A helmet, insurance, license plates and the relevant driving license are required to be able to travel at higher speeds, however. While the BMW i Vision AMBY requires constant pedaling in order to gain assistance from the electric drive, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY is accelerated using the throttle grip and has footrests instead of pedals, as is typical of a motorcycle. The modes available to the rider are stored in the app on the smartphone that connects to the respective AMBY vision vehicle. It's come down to this for BMW, apparently. If they can't seem to design much of anything interesting on four wheels these days, there's always two wheels... -PMD

And, there's this: The BMW i Vision Circular finds the BMW Group looking ahead to a compact BMW for the year 2040, one that is focused on sustainability and luxury. The fully-electric four-seater "offers a generous amount of interior space within its around four-meter-long footprint," BMW's PR minions say. It has been designed according to circular economy principles across the board and therefore symbolizes the BMW Group’s ambitious plan to become the world’s most sustainable manufacturer in the individual premium mobility space. Editor-in-Chief's Note: We could say we're looking forward to BMW in the year 2040, but, nah. -PMD

(Audi images)
Audi is calling its electric grandsphere concept study a "private jet for the road" and it is presenting it at the IAA 2021. (Editor-in-Chief's Note: Audi's habit of using lower case letters is beyond tedious at this point, so we're using an upper case "G" from now on. -PMD.) The Grandsphere sedan is 17.6 ft. long and it "combines the luxury of private travel in the greatest of comfort with a comprehensive onboard experience...," according to Audi PR minions. Level 4 automated driving makes new dimensions of freedom possible: in this mode, "the interior turns into a spacious sphere of experience without a steering wheel, pedals, or displays. And the front seats become a first class lounge with maximum space, more open views, and access to all the functions of a holistic digital ecosystem that the Audi Grandsphere is integrated into." (We can hardly wait. Not.) Audi says that the technologies and design features assembled in the Grandsphere are expected to turn up again in future Audi products. The Audi Grandsphere concept "illustrates the brand’s claim that it is becoming a trendsetter at the top of the automotive industry for technological transformation and completely new, holistic mobility offerings." And, we'll stop there because the rest of this press release was just flat-out too boring for words. -PMD

(Mecum Auction images)
We're not a big booster of the car auction game, as longtime readers know. The auction game boosts vehicle prices beyond all recognition and fuels the continued movement of these cars away from being affordable for more and more enthusiasts. That said, this particular machine is worth noting. It's the beautiful 1965 Lola T70 Spyder Mk.I Chevrolet formerly owned by Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney, and prepared by Gurney's All American Racers team. It was driven by Jerry Grant back in the day. It was auctioned off at Mecom's Chattanooga, Tennessee, auction on October 15-16.

Cars and Guitars? It never ends, apparently. Fender Musical Instruments Corporation’s (FMIC) Fender Custom Shop (FCS) has announced the launch of a limited-edition Fender® Lexus LC Stratocaster® guitar, the newest custom-built piece from Principal Master Builder, Ron Thorn. Chosen for their passion for bold design, intuitive technology and Takumi craftsmanship, Fender’s alliance with Lexus brings to life the Fender® Lexus LC Stratocaster®. Fender Custom Shop™ will be releasing 100 team-built Fender® Lexus LC Stratocaster® guitars globally. The Stratocaster® guitar includes an omnidirectional Structural Blue finish, a spectral range that produces light metallic blue to deep midnight blue that was originally inspired by the Morpho butterfly. The paint on the Stratocaster® guitar is the same paint that was used on the Lexus LC 500 coupe and convertible Inspiration Series, of which only 200 total vehicles were produced for the US. Structural Blue paint brings to life the rich curvature of the LC 500 body, and now the guitar body. The paint does not contain any blue material — it looks blue only because of the interference of light. Layers of colorless materials come together to generate the ultimate color, hence the name “structural.” The neck is fashioned from beautiful 3A flame maple and finished in high-gloss urethane, imparting a hint of Fender® woodworking tradition in contrast with the instrument’s other advanced visual elements. The fingerboard is made of deep-blue polished Richlite, a composite material known for its tonal properties, structural stability and resistance to wear and moisture, and used by the Fender Custom Shop™ for the first time. The fingerboard has a flatter 12” radius and 22 medium-jumbo stainless steel frets. On darkened stages, the white Luminlay fingerboard inlays glow in vivid blue. Additionally, the fasteners on the pickguard are black button head machine screws that create a clean automotive appearance, while the pickups are Fender’s latest version of our Noiseless Single Coils, another first for the Fender Custom Shop™. To top it off, the headstock face is finished in Structural Blue with a chrome Fender® logo while the custom case is wrapped in carbon fiber textured vinyl, with black leather ends and the Lexus logo embroidered inside the lid. LETTER FROM L.A.

By Tom Pease

Beverly Hills. Look, I like EVs. I like the idea of not paying for gas. But the hard and fast reality is that unless there is a way to make those 80% recharges happen in under 20 minutes they simply will not be a replacement for ICE cars. Not everyone has a house. Not everyone has an apartment with a garage. Not everyone has a workplace with charging stations. Even years ago when I wrote about the Volt for this very publication, I ran into situations where the charging stations were taken - not a problem with the Volt with the ICE backup - but I'd be screwed had I been driving, say, a Leaf.

These days developers are jumping on the anti-car bandwagon and asking cities like Beverly Hills to lower parking requirements for new developments if they have some “affordable” units (because those poor people can just order Postmates, I guess), which seems to be a trend. Never mind “range anxiety” - how about charge anxiety? If I have to add to my list of necessities in looking at an apartment - like off-street parking that I can add a charger to (at my expense) - then that's an issue. If I have to worry not only that some d-bag will take a charging space because he feels like it but that there simply aren't enough of them to accommodate people legitimately charging, then that's an issue. If I decide to drive my EV up north to the wine country on vacation, will I need to plan on an hour or more somewhere in Bakersfield to “top off”?

Now, for the moment, I have an apartment with garage parking that I could pay to have hard wired from my electric meter to a parking space for an at-home charger and because of California rules, they can't say no. Even liking EVs, I am not sure that I would want or be able to justify that expense when there are still ICE cars sold.

Hmmm...maybe in ten years when it's all BEVs I can sell that old BMW at a premium.

The original Corvette Z06 made its debut in 1963, as an optional Special Equipment Package intended for racers. It included a stiffer suspension, heavy-duty brakes, a thicker front stabilizer bar, and a large, 36-gallon fuel tank that reduced the number of necessary pit stops in longer races. A fuel-injected 5.4-liter engine (327 cubic inches) and a close-ratio four-speed manual transmission were required with the package. And now? The next chapter in the mid-engine Corvette story begins with the introduction of the 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06. Arriving two years after the first production mid-engine Corvette Stingray made its debut, the Z06 is designed and engineered to act as a precision tool for the track, "a new American supercar that puts the world on notice," according to Chevrolet PR minions. While the Z06 was created to dominate on the track when it debuted in 1963, the Z06 nameplate has also come to symbolize "the perfect combination of track beast and supercar," Chevy's PR minions continued. “The new Corvette Z06 defines the American supercar,” said General Motors President Mark Reuss. “It builds on the distinctive design and groundbreaking dynamics introduced with the mid-engine Corvette and elevates them to deliver refined but uncompromising track capability with world-class performance.” The Z06 is set apart by its all-new 5.5L LT6, the highest horsepower, naturally-aspirated V-8 to hit the market in any production car, ever.
An all-new flat-plane crankshaft design allows drivers to push the tachometer to a lofty 8,600 rpm, creating 670HP. Engineers spent two years crafting a distinctive, rich exhaust tone unlike anything ever heard from a Corvette. The sound and appearance of the Z06 take direction from Corvette Racing. The direct knowledge transfer from the track to the street has never been more evident. The C8.R has been referred to internally as the Z06 hiding in plain sight. “Racing was the reason the Z06 was developed in 1963, and it continues to support development of the road models that make them better on the street and the track,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer, Corvette. “It also means we’ve tested the Z06 on the best tracks around the world, from Circuit of the Americas here in the United States, to the Nürburgring in Germany.”
“Virtually every component that distinguishes the Z06 was developed to support or enhance its capability,” said Juechter. “By leveraging the mid-engine architecture’s inherent advantages, we are able to achieve six percent more downforce than a seventh-gen ZR1 at eight percent lower drag.” More than horsepower, the new LT6 is designed to complement all aspects of the Z06’s track-focused performance experience. From its 8,600-rpm redline and full racing-style dry-sump oiling system to meticulously tuned induction and exhaust systems, this engine exudes an entirely new and emotional character. The key to the LT6’s performance capability is a lightweight, low-inertia rotating assembly rooted in an all-new flat-plane crankshaft that, along with a comparatively short stroke, allows the engine to rev to its maximum range. A version of the LT6 has powered the C8.R race cars since 2019, and the rigors of endurance road racing helped engineers refine the engine’s performance and durability. Additional LT6 highlights include:
  • All-new aluminum cylinder block casting with the Small Block engine family’s signature 4.4-inch (111.76 mm) bore spacing
  • All-new dual-overhead-camshaft cylinder head design with fully CNC-machined combustion chambers and intake ports, supporting a mechanical “finger follower” valvetrain
  • Dual-coil valve springs to support titanium intake and sodium filled exhaust valves
  • Forged aluminum pistons and forged titanium connecting rods for low mass and high strength
  • Distinctive Edge Red camshaft covers
  • All-new active split intake manifold with twin 87 mm throttle bodies
  • All-new six-stage dry-sump oiling system with individual crank bay scavenging
  • Four-into-two-into-one stainless steel exhaust headers
  • 670 hp at 8,400 rpm (GM tested per SAE J1349)
  • 460 lb-ft (623 Nm) of torque @ 6300 rpm (GM tested per SAE J1349)
The LT6 is hand assembled by master engine builders at the Performance Build Center within the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky. Builders use precision tooling and hand fit pieces of the engine to meet Chevrolet’s exact specifications. Each engine features a plaque on the intake manifold with the signature of the technician who crafted it from start to finish.
Almost every exterior detail unique to the Z06 serves a purpose for aerodynamics, handling or cooling, with styling cues that accentuate the car’s sense of motion. The wider fenders accommodate larger, wider wheels and tires for more grip. Larger vents — including a new front fascia that, like the C8.R race car, draws clean air into a center heat exchanger — provide more cooling air to the engine, brakes and transaxle for increased track capability. Additionally, a more aggressive aerodynamic package is designed to enhance cornering grip and high-speed stability. The wider wheels and tires include 20 x 10-inch (50.8 x 25.4 cm) front wheels wrapped with 275/30ZR20 tires and 21 x 13-inch (53.3 x 33 cm) rear wheels, used with 345/25ZR21 tires. Michelin® Pilot Sport 4S ZP tires are standard, with Sport Cup 2 R ZP tires included with the available Z07 package. Designers pulled out the fenders in the front and rear to cover the wider tire tread, which are 30 mm front and 40 mm rear wider than the Corvette Stingray. These extensions give the Corvette Z06 a wider, lower appearance further emphasized by a unique rear fascia that also features centered floating exhaust bezels. This floating design was key to the precise tuning in the exhaust note. The wider rear fender also allows for the larger air intakes required for the car’s cooling. The new Z06 retains the SLA-type front and rear suspension design of the Corvette Stingray, but uniquely calibrated for its higher performance capabilities. Magnetic Selective Ride Control 4.0 is standard and can be adjusted for touring comfort or maximum track performance via the standard Driver Mode Selector. The Z06’s greater track performance capability is also matched with greater braking capability, with larger 14.6-inch-diameter (370 mm) front and 15-inch-diameter (380 mm) rear Brembo® rotors, compared with the Stingray. Z06 has six-piston front calipers compared to four-piston calipers on Stingray. Even larger, carbon ceramic rotors are available and also included with the Z07 package, which takes the Corvette Z06’s performance to its zenith.

When equipped with the Z07 performance package in the track prepared configuration on a 300-foot diameter circle, the car is capable of 1.22 g of road-hugging grip. The Z06 is based on the same robust architecture as the Stingray — a rigid structure that enabled engineers to fine-tune the car’s chassis and suspension components with exceptional precision. The Z06 is so stiff that the track-capable Z06 is offered in a hardtop convertible model, and there is no variance in the suspension calibrations between it and the coupe. In the driver-focused cockpit, unique features include an available carbon fiber-wrapped steering wheel, shift paddles and new carbon fiber interior trim package level 2. The Z06 also features hand-wrapped leather interior options, including the all-new, available fully trimmed interior in Adrenaline Red. Additional new wheel, color and trim options offer Z06 customers the most personalization choices in the Corvette lineup.
Production of the 2023 Corvette Z06 begins in summer 2022. It will be built at Bowling Green Assembly in left- and right-hand drive. Watch the intro video here.

From the "More Cowbell" File: Chevrolet Performance has introduced the ZZ632/1000 crate engine, "the largest and most powerful crate engine in the brand’s history," according to Chevrolet PR minions. The naturally aspirated 632-cubic-inch V-8 produces 1,004HP and 876 lb-ft of torque. “This is the biggest, baddest crate engine we’ve ever built,” said Russ O’Blenes, GM director of the Performance and Racing Propulsion Team. “The ZZ632 sits at the top of our unparalleled crate engine lineup as the king of performance. It delivers incredible power, and it does it on pump gas.” The Big Block V-8 reaches peak power at 6,600 rpm and revs to a recommended maximum of 7,000 rpm. Fuel is delivered by eight port injectors with the engine breathing through CNC-machined high-flow aluminum cylinder heads featuring symmetrical ports. While Big Blocks have traditionally been designed with variations in port shape from cylinder to cylinder, all eight intake ports of the ZZ632 have the same length, volume and layout. Similarly, all of the ZZ632’s exhaust ports are identical. This symmetry ensures individual cylinders all produce similar power. These RS-X Symmetrical Port cylinder heads are named for powertrain engineer Ron Sperry, who designed them as one of his final accomplishments in more than 50 years working on General Motors performance and racing engines. Sperry also introduced symmetrical ports to Chevy’s iconic Small Block V-8 with the Gen III LS1 engine that debuted in the 1997 Chevrolet Corvette. The ZZ632’s iron block shares a mold with Chevrolet Performance’s ZZ572 crate engines, but the castings are machined to accommodate the massive 632-cubic-inch displacement. The bore grows by 0.040 inch compared to the 572-cubic-inch V-8s, with most of the displacement gain coming from a stroke that’s 0.375 inch longer. To provide clearance for that long stroke, engineers modified both the block and the connecting rods. Four-bolt main caps and a forged rotating assembly ensure strength and durability. During development, a single engine endured more than 200 simulated drag strip passes on a dynamometer. The ZZ632/1000 crate engine will be on display at the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nov. 2–5. Chevrolet Performance dealers will begin deliveries in early 2022.

Among the many vehicles Stellantis is unveiling at the SEMA Show is this Dodge Challenger Holy Guacamole concept. Starting with a 2020 limited-production Challenger R/T Scat Pack Widebody 50th Anniversary edition and then giving it a throwback treatment from the 1970s is definitely a hot look. The Challenger Holy Guacamole concept’s exterior is awash in a custom green paint color - affectionately named "Rotten Avocado" by Dodge designers - and it also features a custom-painted “Gold School” Shaker hood scoop, unique tone-on-tone side striping, staggered 20-inch Forgeline wheels and Mopar coil-over suspension lowering kit. Under the functional Shaker hood is a Mopar cold-air intake, conical air filter and optimized air box for improved airflow and performance from the 392 (cubic inch) HEMI V-8 engine. The interior is decked out with wood panel trim and seats and door panels that sport green and yellow plaid inserts as a tribute to some of the colors and materials found in the iconic original 1970 Challenger. We. Love. It.

Maserati is celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Ghibli. On November 3, 1966, the Ghibli made its debut on the world stage at the Ghia stand at the Turin Motor Show. A new interpretation of the gran turismo concept, the two-seater coupé was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who was at Ghia at the time. The name recalled a powerful, warm wind in North Africa that carries with it a great deal of sand. The decision to take its name was no coincidence, given the car’s speed and the 'warmth’ of its technical and stylistic specifications. The engine for the Ghibli was newly designed, but based on the well-known 8-cylinder used in the Mexico. It could deliver an output of 330HP in the 4,700-cc version, and was followed by an even more powerful 4,900-cc version. After it was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show, the Ghibli was launched in 1967. The following year, its interior was restyled and could also be fitted on demand with automatic transmission, as well as a 5-speed manual gearbox. From 1969, the Spyder version also became available, which could be equipped with a hard top; one year later, both models were also offered with a 4,900-cc engine, taking the name Ghibli SS. In all, 128 Ghibli Spyder and more than 1,200 Ghibli coupé models were produced between 1967 and 1972. One was purchased by Henry Ford II, who would place it in the lobby of the Ford Product Development Center in Detroit, as an example to follow and a source of inspiration.

(Porsche)
The new 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is the new, go-fast 718 that shares its naturally aspirated heart with the 911 GT3. The naturally aspirated flat-six engine used in the 911 GT3 Cup car and the road-going 911 GT3 represents the heart of this uncompromising driver’s car. The engine revs up to 9,000 rpm. Power increases by 79HP compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 to a total of 493HP, resulting in a weight-to-power ratio of 6.55 lbs. per hp. Maximum torque increases from 317 lb.-ft. to 331 lb.-ft. Like every modern RS variant, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS will be offered exclusively with the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK).The 718 Cayman GT4 RS accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds – half a second quicker than the 414HP 718 Cayman GT4 with PDK. Top track speed is 196 mph (GT4 with PDK: 187 mph), which the GT4 RS reaches in seventh gear. There is a long list of additional improvements/ingredients, which we won't go into here, but suffice to say, the thing is blistering quick and looks good to boot. How quick? During final testing and evaluation drives on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a lap of the 20.832 kilometer (12.944 mile) track in 7:09.300 minutes. On the shorter track variant, which was formerly used as a benchmark (20.6 km in length), the GT4 RS set a time of 7:04.511 minutes – 23.6 seconds quicker than the 718 Cayman GT4. If that isn't enough to get your checkbook out, Porsche Design has created a Porsche Design Chronograph 718 Cayman GT4 RS, which will be offered exclusively to buyers of the vehicle. So, there's that. The new 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS has an MSRP of $141,700, (not including a $1,350 delivery, processing and handling fee). It is expected to reach U.S. dealers at some point next summer.
(Porsche images)
Porsche also revealed the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The mid-engine race car from Weissach is based on the new, and recently revealed, 718 Cayman GT4 RS road car. As with its road-going sibling, the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is equipped with the 4.0 liter six-cylinder boxer engine taken directly from the 911 GT3 Cup race car and develops 500HP in the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport – 75HP more than the previous GT4 Clubsport model. The homologated 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport is track-ready from the factory and can be used in SRO racing series around the world without further modifications. The starting price of the new 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, which will be sold and distributed through Porsche Motorsport North America in the U.S., is $229,000, not including tax. Interested customers can contact Porsche Motorsport North America at info@porschemotorsport.com.

In order to extricate as much money as possible from its electrified faithful, Porsche has unveiled the Taycan GTS sedan and Taycan GTS Sport Turismo. Enhanced styling and performance as well as "unique suspension tuning and 'Electric Sport Sound' among an array of changes that denote that this is the first electric GTS," according to Porsche PR minions. The Taycan GTS sedan and GTS Sport Turismo feature the same permanent magnet single-speed front motor, larger permanent magnet rear motor with a diameter of 245 mm and an active length of 210 mm, and two-speed rear transmission. Total power output is 590HP with Launch Control, slotting the GTS models in between the Taycan 4S (462HP) and Taycan Turbo (670HP). They both have a bunch of tweaks and GTS tchotchkes so buyers can ascend to Biggest Tool in the Shed status. How much? The Taycan GTS sedan starts at $131,400, while the Taycan GTS Sport Turismo will start at $133,300. ($1,350 delivery, processing, and handling fee extra.)

Hyundai Motor Company has unveiled SEVEN, a new sport utility electric vehicle (SUEV) concept. SEVEN’s design and innovation previews Hyundai’s future sport utility electric vehicle (SUEV). The interior architecture "assures greater freedom and comfort for passengers, while furniture-like seats and features provide a premium lounge experience," according to Hyundai PR minions. Well, alrighty then!

(Kia images)
Then there's the Kia Concept EV9. Following the launch of the EV6, the Kia Concept EV9 hints at the next model in Kia’s dedicated EV lineup. The all-electric SUV concept embodies Kia's new "Opposites United" design language, which heavily influences the Concept EV9’s "adventurous and angular exterior." But that's not all. The interior space takes inspiration from the "Water Element" of Opposites United, "establishing a positive relationship with the outside world." Wow. We see that Kia designers are immersed - and lost - in the dulcet tones of their own thought balloons.

(Superformance)
Another entry from the "Biggest Tool In The Shed" File: Shelby "enthusiasts" looking for a special gift can acquire an electrified metallic blue MKIII-E Cobra EV alongside a special edition bike from Vintage Electric bikes. The new Superformance MKIII-E uses a Tesla Model S rear-drive motor with 1500 pound-feet of torque. Under the MKIII-E hood is a custom-made battery pack featuring two LG Energy 16-cell units paired in a 32-kWh pack to establish up to 100 miles of range. (Wow, you're kidding, right?) The ultra-lightweight MKIII-E drives on a set of sticky 275/35-18 Nitto tires and offers specially-tuned regenerative braking. You can also get a new Vintage Electric Shelby bike outfitted with a 48-volt battery along with a 1,123-watt battery cell. The large battery is housed in a matte black cast-aluminum housing that charges in 4.5 hours. After a full charge, the Vintage Electric Shelby offers up to a 75-mile range. The new Vintage Electric Shelby bike includes a specially-tuned "Race mode" that is capable of speeds up to 36 mph. The EV Cobra bundle from Superformance and Vintage Electric is available at a price of $190,000.00. Yes, you read that correctly. Editor-in-Chief's Note: This is so wrong on so many levels I don't even know where to begin. I get that there's a movement to convert ICE machines to EVs, but the pure essence of the Cobra was that it was a snarling, barely tameable beast that barked and snorted its way to become an icon of automotive history. I don't care how fast this EV version is, it's not a Cobra and it will never compare to the sound and fury - and ferocious nature - of the real thing. As for the bike? Whatever. -PMD

BMW M GmbH unveiled its BMW Concept XM at Art Basel’s 2021 Miami Beach show this week. It allegedly "looks ahead to the most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production," according to BMW PR minions. In case you're wondering, the BMW Concept XM provides a preview of the new front end design for BMW’s forthcoming luxury-class models (Oh, joy- WG). The series-production model – the BMW XM – will begin production at the end of 2022 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina. BMW M will therefore be introducing its first standalone vehicle since the legendary BMW M1 in the year it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The BMW XM will be available only as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and exclusively as an M model. The bold exterior styling of the BMW Concept XM reflects the vehicle’s exceptional performance attributes: power, agility, and precision, plus an all-electric range of up to 80 km (WLTP) and up to 30 miles (preliminary estimate, not an official EPA value), according to BMW. The newly developed M Hybrid drive system in the BMW Concept XM brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop a maximum output of 750HP and peak torque of 737 lb-ft. It will be the first electrified vehicle from BMW M GmbH in the high-performance segment. Editor-in-Chief's Note: I see BMW designers are pushing their "Gaping Maw" design language to ridiculous extremes, because, well, why not? No one seems to care anyway. Yes, I know this is a "concept," but who's kidding whom here? You know this will basically be it. I will say this much for it, the interior is scrumptious. So, there's that. And so it goes. -PMD

(Ferrari images)
The Ferrari Daytona SP3 is a limited edition that joins the Icona series, which debuted in 2018 with the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2. It's an homage to the legendary Ferrari 330 P3/4, one of the most beautiful racing cars ever built. On February 6th 1967, Ferrari swept the top three places at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the first round of that year’s International World Sports Car Championship. (It was also the last sports car victory for Ferrari that year, as the Ford Mk IV won the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.) The three cars that took the checkered flag that day – 1. Bandini/Amon (No. 23 330 P3/4); 2. Parkes/Scarfiotti (No. 24 330 P4) and 3. Rodriguez/Guichet (No. 26 412 P) – represented the pinnacle of development of the Ferrari 330 P3, a model that chief engineer Mauro Forghieri had significantly improved in each of the three racing car fundamentals: engine, chassis and aerodynamics. The 330 P3/4 perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the sports prototypes of the 1960s, a decade now considered the golden era of closed wheel racing and an enduring reference point for generations of engineers and designers. The name of the new Icona - Ferrari Daytona SP3 - pays tribute to that legendary 1-2-3 finish, and it was presented at the Mugello Circuit during the 2021 Ferrari Finali Mondiali on November 20th. The Daytona SP3’s design "is a harmonious interplay of contrasts, sublimely sculptural, voluptuous surfaces alternating with the kind of sharper lines that revealed the burgeoning importance of aerodynamics in the design of racers such as the 330 P4, 350 Can-Am and 512 S," according to Ferrari PR minions. The choice of a ‘Targa’ body with a removable hard top for the Daytona SP3 "not only delivers exhilarating driving pleasure but also usable performance," according to Ferrari. From a technical perspective, the Daytona SP3 features a naturally-aspirated, mid-rear-mounted V12. The most iconic of all Maranello’s engines, this engine delivers 829HP – making it the most powerful engine ever built by Ferrari – along with 697 Nm of torque and maximum revs of 9500 rpm. The chassis is built entirely from composite materials using Formula 1 technologies that have not been seen in a road car since the LaFerrari, Maranello’s last supercar. The seat is an integral part of the chassis to reduce weight and guarantee the driver a driving position similar to that of a competition car. And, just like the machines that inspired it, the aerodynamic research and design focused on achieving maximum efficiency purely using passive aero solutions. Thanks to unprecedented features, such as chimneys that extract low-pressure air from the underbody, the Daytona SP3 is the most aerodynamically efficient car ever built by Ferrari without resorting to active aero devices. Because of the clever integration of these technical innovations, the car can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 2.85s and from zero to 200km/h in just 7.4s. "Exhilarating performance, an extreme set-up, and the intoxicating V12 soundtrack deliver completely unparalleled driving pleasure," the Ferrari PR minions concluded (We concur -WG). How much? It doesn't really matter, but it's probably somewhere north of $2 million. And they're probably all sold anyway, but they may build 500 of them (or fewer). Editor-in-Chief's Note: Okay, so this machine put me right over the edge. The Ferrari 330 P3/P4 was one of my all-time favorite racing cars. And this Daytona SP3 is the most desirable Ferrari ever built, in my estimation. Just, wow. And, by the way, it's our AUTOEXTREMIST CAR OF THE YEAR. -PMD

Editor-in-Chief's Note: In keeping with the Shit Show that this country has become over the last half-decade, Time magazine had the temerity to name Elon Musk its "Person of the Year." Not that anyone actually cares about that magazine anymore, but still, this is an outrage. It's one more example of the unmitigated bullshit that surrounds Musk, the malevolent P.T. Asshole who has gotten a free pass from just about everyone, from Wall Street and the media, to the sycophant owners who have become a real live cult. His cars have the kind of quality problems that if they surfaced on cars from any other mainstream manufacturer would at the very least provoke a Congressional investigation, if not cause the manufacturer in question to go bankrupt. This is a guy who has repeatedly boasted that his cars - if you order the $10,000+ "full self-driving" feature - will do exactly that, when in fact the feature is a complete sham, and has directly resulted in multiple deaths of Tesla owners. NHTSA is just now getting around to this debacle, and as I've already predicted, the fines and the subsequent lawsuits could soar into the billions. Not that Musk actually gives a shit. He's a notorious tyrant "boss" who makes everyone around him sorry they're employed to do his bidding. He was sued by two former workers for racial discrimination - and lost - to the tune of $100 million, and more lawsuits are on the docket for the exact same thing. Oh, and by the way, he is also being sued for sexual harassment at Tesla. He's so relentlessly anti-union that he has been found guilty of union-busting by the NLRB. That's not all. Based on his comments of late, it's clear that Musk has grown tired of the auto business. It's too complicated and too messy, and he doesn't want to be held accountable by pissed off customers. In fact he bristles at being held accountable for anything. He just wants to be proclaimed a "genius" in perpetuity, and that seems to be the price of entry required to assuage his giant ego going forward. To top it all off, the alleged "richest man on the planet" steadfastly refuses to give any money to charities. Why? He doesn't believe in it. And spare me the discussion that Time has awarded bad people this distinction in the past. This eclipses all of those other mistakes. (And I don't give a shit about his rockets either, in case you're wondering.) Asshole of the Year? Definitely. Ego-maniacal Scumbag of the Year? Absolutely. Worst Person in the World? Musk has retired that title; no one else even comes close. But "Person of the Year?" No Fucking Way. -PMD (12/13)

(Audi)
Audi has unveiled the Audi S1 E-Tron Quattro Hoonitron that it has exclusively and uniquely developed for American drift artist Ken Block. This all-electric one-of-a-kind machine will be showcased in a new video that Block is producing together with his team for release in the next few months. The S1 Hoonitron has two electric motors, all-wheel drive, a carbon fiber chassis, and the full safety standards as prescribed by motorsport’s top governing body, the FIA. Block drove it in November. “Audi gave me the opportunity to test it for a few days in Germany,” said Block. “I’m familiar with a wide variety of cars using internal combustion engines and transmissions, but there were a lot of new things for me to learn here. Spinning into a donut at 150 km/h directly from standstill – just using my right foot – is an all-new experience for me. Our work was focused on getting the car and I used to each other. My thanks go to the whole Audi Sport squad for their outstanding teamwork.” The entire development - including the technology - of the S1 Hoonitron was conducted by Audi Sport at its Neckarsulm location, where the Audi RS E-Tron GT is produced. Audi Design in Ingolstadt was responsible for the styling, which has been anything but a run-of-the-mill job for Marc Lichte and his team. “When we first heard about this project, the whole team was thrilled immediately: we had the opportunity to develop a car that combines an icon of our brand with the future,” said Audi’s chief designer. “It was about creating a modern, all-electric interpretation of the S1 Pikes Peak. The timeline was extremely tight: while our design process normally takes one to one-and-a-half years, we only had four weeks from the first drawing to the final design. We were constantly in touch with Ken Block and his team and engaged in intensive exchanges.” Fans will soon be able to see the project for themselves. Under the working title Elektrikhana, Ken Block and his team are going to produce the next chapter of his famous Gymkhana video series featuring the S1 Hoonitron. (12/15)

In 1952, a young Bob Hirohata purchased a 1951 Mercury and delivered it to the era’s most famous customizing duo, brothers Sam and George Barris, for a radical overhaul that almost instantly became the most prominent and well-known customization of the classic car era. Now, more than a half-century later, the 1951 Hirohata Mercury Custom (Lot S152) continues to be celebrated as a timeless and unforgettable work of art, and it will soon cross the auction block at Mecum Kissimmee 2022, the world’s largest collector car auction, slated for this Jan. 6-16 at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida (along with approximately 3,500 other classic and collector cars and 1,000 items of Road Art and memorabilia). As the uncontested king of the classic custom era, this car’s history is well-known, documented through the pages of numerous magazines during the past 70 years. It started with delivery to the Barris brothers’ shop in Lynwood, California, where Hirohata directed Sam and George to “go all out” on the customization of his car. That’s exactly what they did, turning the car into an entirely new machine unlike any to come before it. That same year, it made its debut at the 1952 Petersen-hosted Motorama, where it was named the Class Winner, garnering feature stories in Hot Rod, Rod & Custom, HOP UP and even the cover of MotorTrend. Following its success at Motorama, the car became Hirohata’s daily driver. More magazine coverage followed, including a Route 66 road trip to the Indy 500 in 1953, where it won the big car show there, earning the moniker “Mercillac” as a result. Meanwhile, George Barris arranged for the car to appear in the teen car film “Runnin’ Wild,” featuring Mamie Van Doren, and he also repainted the upper area in Avocado Green for better contrast on-screen. This is how it appeared when Hirohata sold it in late 1955. Refreshed for its invitational entry at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 2015, the car retains the 1953 Cadillac 331 cu. in. OHV V-8 with three Stromberg carburetors and all the special tricks of the Barris crew, resulting in both First in Class and the Dean Batchelor Most Significant awards at Pebble Beach. Soon thereafter, the Hirohata Merc was added to the National Historic Vehicle Register and displayed for a week in a glass enclosure on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and it then traveled to the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles, where it was again presented to the eager viewing public. “Few vehicles ever built have received the global attention and jaw-dropping awe that the Hirohata Merc has,” Vice President of Consignments Frank Mecum stated. “Mecum Kissimmee 2022 has many headlining consignments, but this iconic gem will draw the appeal of everyone for its ageless beauty and unique, history-making design, craftsmanship and presentation.” (12/21)

Our AE Song of the Year:

I am a passenger
And I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backside
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, they're bright in a hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight

I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripped-back sky
And everything looks good tonight

Singin' la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la

Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
See the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
The sky was made for us tonight

Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the silent hollow sky
He see the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine

Singin' la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la

Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window's eye
He sees the things he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city asleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride

Singin' la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la
Singin' la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la, la-la

"The Passenger" by Iggy Pop, from the album "Lust For Life" (1977)*. Written by James Jewell Osterberg Jr. Watch the Official Music Video here

*Iggy Pop's real name is James Jewell Osterberg, Jr. In high school, he was the drummer for a band called The Iguanas, so when he was a member of the band The Prime Movers, his bandmates gave him the name "Iggy." His first stage name was Iggy Stooge, which became the basis for his band, The Stooges. With The Stooges and as a solo act, he became one of the most influential and authentic Punk performers. Pop is famous for bleeding on stage. The first time he cut himself was by accident when he fell on a drink glass. The crowd went nuts, so he made the blood part of his show. He was also one of the first to incorporate stage dives and crowd surfing into his shows. Iggy was raised in a trailer park in Ypsilanti, Michigan. He was addicted to heroin for much of the '70s. David Bowie produced his albums Raw PowerThe Idiot, and Lust For Life. He toured with Bowie in 1976-1977, and helped him write "China Girl" in 1983. He got the name "Pop" because he once shaved his eyebrows for a show, making him look like a friend with the last name Popp who had recently undergone chemotherapy and was eyebrow-less himself. When Jim Morrison died, Iggy was considered as his replacement in The Doors. The remaining Doors decided to continue on as a trio, so this never materialized. (Knowledge courtesy of Songfacts.com)
