Editor's Note: Peter will return later today with a very special Fumes column. He is appearing tonight at the N. Lake Drive 100 MPH Club's fall event in Wisconsin, and his next column will be made up of the text from his remarks. The subject? The State of Racing: Where we've been, where we are now and what's next. I will be posting his speech tonight around 9:30 p.m. - WG

Riverside, California, January 17, 1965. A.J. Foyt at speed in his No. 00 Holman-Moody Ford during the Motor Trend 500 NASCAR Grand National race at Riverside International Raceway. Foyt had a tremendous battle with Dan Gurney (No. 121 Wood Brothers/Agusta Motor Sales Ford) for the lead, but would eventually succumb to brake failure, resulting in one of the most devastating wrecks of his career. Junior Johnson (No. 27 Junior Johnson/Holly Farms Poultry Ford) finished second and Marvin Panch (No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford) finished third. Watch a video here.
